ASTRI, in partnership with two other HKSAR Government-subvented R&D centres, developed a tracking and monitoring system that protects vulnerable groups like the elderly. The system, which has been applied in 11 elderly day care centres of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGH), has been chosen as the “Best Smart Care Technology Solution” at the 6th Asia Pacific Eldercare Innovation Awards. The award ceremony was recently held in Singapore.
TWGH, the end-user of the system, had nominated this “Installation of anti-wandering system for Day Care Centre for the Elderly” solution for this award. The system which works simultaneously through built-in RFID, GPS and BLE trackers. It greatly reduces the risk of vulnerable senior citizens being missing from elderly homes or other care centres. In addition to making life less stressful for the caregivers, the system also facilitates the improvement of elderly-caregiver ratio and overall service quality. Most importantly, it allows the elderly to be more involved in outdoor activities without the risk of getting lost.
The project has been a collaborative effort of three Government-subvented institutions: Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI), Hong Kong Logistics and Supply Chain MultiTech R&D Centre (LSCM) and Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA). These quangos, bringing together their collective strength and expertise, developed a tracking system to improve elderly-care. While LSCM contributed the RFID and GPS tracking system, HKRITA designed a special vest which houses the RFID tracker, GPS tracker and the BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) device hardware. ASTRI provided the proximity monitoring system through BLE, responsible for the whole system integration, hosting the main server. ASTRI also conducted the system’s trial at TWGH facilities and Wong Chung Tong Day Care Centre for the Elderly.
The ‘6th Asia Pacific Eldercare Innovation Awards’ is widely revered as the ‘Oscar for the Eldercare sector’ in the Asia-Pacific region. This year, the award nominees and participants represented 19 countries and territories from across the region.
ASTRI has worked with the healthcare industry to develop a low-cost, handheld, connected Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscope. With its high definition disposable camera design, the device can stream real-time video to large displays, helping the process of diagnosis with no need for complicated sterilisation.

ASTRI is developing an image analytics platform for digital pathology. It is based on a scalable medical image database, distributed parallel computing engine, and a powerful application development environment for Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD). The platform can support efficient management of medical image data. It also facilitates reliable web-based digital pathological information exchanged in telediagnosis and agile development of CAD applications.

ASTRI has established a family of low power ADC IPs.
12/14 bit low power Successive Approximation Register (SAR) ADC delivers low power and low cost analog to digital conversion of reasonable performance for portable medical and sensor devices. ASTRI’s IP is already in mass production for various applications.
24-bit sigma delta ADC is based on sigma delta technology intended primarily for instrumentation applications. It consists of a second-order three-bit quantizer noise shaping modulator and digital decimation filter.

The smart reflective pulse oximeter for remote health monitoring was licensed to several tier-one healthcare manufacturers in Hong Kong and the Mainland for integration into their products, including a wristwatch for measuring vital signs such as body temperature, pulse rate, pulse oximetry and electrocardiogram which has been launched into the market
The device was also installed in the Hong Kong Housing Society Elderly Resources Centre as one of the technologies used to realize intellectual housing for the elderly. With its elderly-friendly design, the device helps the seniors to check their health condition in a comfortable and convenient manner.
A portable embedded optical device for non-invasive blood glucose measurement which can be easily used to measure blood glucose instantly and non-invasively is being developed. This device can be used for screening of pre-diabeters and frequent blood glucose measurement of diabetes patients.
A device to facilitate early detection and screening of elderly with cognitive health problems and also assessing the stress level of general public is being developed. This device can be used for early detection and continual monitoring of cognitive impairment, as well as to improve the experience and ease of cognitive assessment for the elderly in Hong Kong.
