ASTRI combines its ICT talents with sensors, intelligence, and next generation network and security technologies to improve the way the city operates, shares information and, ultimately, improves the quality of residents' lives. ASTRI develops various tools and platforms that enable Smart City technologies to seamlessly communicate with each other. Our Smart City R&D efforts seek to deliver increased functionality in AI-assisted technologies and, with that, a better quality of life for the people of Hong Kong. We help to build a Smart Hong Kong whereby in a few years’ time, people will live symbiotically in a city that not only houses them, but also helps them to thrive.
A smart city is an urban development vision to integrate multiple information and communication technology (ICT) and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions in a secure fashion to manage a city’s assets – the city’s assets include, but are not limited to, local departments information systems, schools, libraries, transportation systems, hospitals, power plants, water supply networks, waste management, law enforcement, and other community services.
We work to deliver innovative technologies with applications in the financing sector – our Financial Technologies (FinTech) teams develop solutions that leverage Blockchain technology, strengthen cybersecurity, make sense of big data, and provide valuable proofs-of-concept that benefit the entire financial industry. As one of Hong Kong’s strongest FinTech R&D groups, we are committed to helping drive the sector’s growth into a new era and help contributing to the development of Hong Kong as an international financial hub.

It is an alternative to traditional banking offerings that innovates the financial industry around the world.

Focusing on Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Re-Industrialisation and Intelligent Manufacturing is one of the six pillars in ASTRI’s R&D strategy. ASTRI develops a number of advanced platforms, tools and solutions that can help transform the industrial sector. By continuing to develop and apply artificial intelligence to production processes, ASTRI’s sophisticated and advanced technologies help to create inter-connected, fully digital smart factories, enabling businesses to streamline their operations, work more efficiently, and be kinder to the environment.
Re-Industrialisation and Intelligent Manufacturing is the development and implementation of artificial intelligence in manufacturing. It refers to the use of production process technology that can automatically adapt to changing environments and varying process requirements, with the capability of manufacturing various products with minimal supervision and assistance from operators.
Through new applications in areas like preventative health monitoring, medical diagnosis and medical computing, ASTRI aims to help the growth and improvement in Hong Kong’s healthcare industry and positively influence the city’s technological competence - for the benefit of its people. Many of our innovations - such as Telehealth Technology Platform, Tracking and Monitoring for the elderly, Intelligent Preventive Healthcare System, and non-invasive health screening devices ─ have been adopted by hospitals, care centres and other healthcare service providers.
ASTRI’s Health Technologies Initiative aims to play a pivoting supporting role by information and communication technologies in the national effort to develop and deploy health technologies.
As the first CNERC branch in Hong Kong, ASTRI is responsible for many technological innovations, tools and solutions across multiple industry sectors. Using its mandate to focus on Application Specific Integrated Circuits, ASTRI has developed a number of solutions that serve various sectors such as smart manufacturing, smart city development, financial technologies as well as next generation network solutions.
ASTRI develops infrastructure and platform of new technologies for wide applications, for instance in the areas of public safety and smart cities. Our goal is to play a pivoting role in supporting the development of the next generation network.
Metaverse is the next milestone in the development of the Internet and one of the six core research areas of ASTRI. The development of metaverse needs to start from both hardware and software to promote the virtualisation of the world and build a new work and life model. ASTRI is committed to developing metaverse related technology such as AR, VR, virtual asset trading, and cost-effective metaverse gadgets such as smart glasses, so that the technologies can be promoted to all walks of life, improve work efficiency and enhance Hong Kong's overall competitiveness.

Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute Company Limited (ASTRI) was founded by the Government of the Hong Kong SAR in 2000 with the mission of enhancing Hong Kong’s competitiveness in technology-based industries through applied research. ASTRI’s R&D strategic focus covers five areas of applications: Smart City, Financial Technologies (FinTech), Intelligent Manufacturing, Health Technologies, and Application Specific Integrated Circuits.
