Technology Transfer & Commercialisation

FAQs

1. What is technology transfer?
Technology transfer is the process of transferring knowledge or technologies developed at the ASTRI to the industries, which can be done through technology licensing, contract services, Industry Collaborative Project and other legal means.

2. How do I work with ASTRI?
We have 5 ways of cooperation:

  1. ITF-Funded Platform Project
  2. Industry Collaborative Project
  3. Contract Research
  4. ITF-funded Seed Projects
  5. Public Sector Trial Scheme (PSTS)

3. What is ITF-Funded Platform Project?
Projects that are mainly funded by ITC with industry contribution of at least 10% of the total project costs. ASTRI owns all intellectual property rights but industry partners can license the IP non-exclusively.

4. What is Industry Collaborative Project?
Both ASTRI and partners contribute fund and other resources. For industry contribution over 30%, industry partner can exclusively license the foreground intellectual property for a period; for industry contribution over 50%, industry partner can own the foreground intellectual property.

5. What is Contract Research?
Industry is responsible for 100% of R&D project costs. The R&D projects are customised according to industry partners’ requests. Industry partner can own the foreground intellectual property.

6. What is ITF-funded Seed Project?
Project that is forward-looking or exploratory work, providing foundation work for future projects.

7. What is Public Sector Trial Scheme (PSTS)?
PSTS provides funding support for production of prototypes/samples and conducting of trial schemes in the public sector to facilitate and promote the realisation andcommercialisation of R&D results under ITF projects.

The prototypes/samples and the trial schemes should aim to facilitate the development of new products not already available in the market currently, and employing the R&D results/deliverables of the completed ITF projects.

8. What is a licence?
A licence is a permission that the owner or controller of intellectual property grants to another party, usually under a license agreement.

10. What are your licensing terms?
There are several key considerations in licensing terms, in addition to licensing fees, namely: exclusive / non-exclusive, territorial (limited to certain territories / worldwide), time (typically 3 – 10 years).

11. How much do I have to pay?
There isn’t any fixed formula for licence pricing and it depends on several factors:
(a) the amount of ITF funding provided;
(b) the contribution of project results to the final product/services launched;
(c) market forecast, business practices (including pricing of products and services in individual industry sectors, etc.); and
(d) the efforts made by parties concerned.
