ASTRI introduces Graduate Programme 2020, one of our talent nurturing initiatives

  • [Hong Kong, 21 July 2020] The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) has launched its first Graduate Programme 2020 (the Programme). It offers university graduates (2019-20) a unique opportunity to begin a career in technology research environment. The initiative serves as a timely response to the city’s soaring unemployment. 

     

    The Programme offers one-time, two-year full-time job positions with potential job rotation. It opens doors for Hong Kong’s new graduates from universities and higher education institutes. ASTRI is Hong Kong’s largest applied technology R&D Centre and nearly one in four of our technologists and engineers has a PhD. Successful candidates of the Program will work across a wide range of disciplines in technology research and corporate developments. They will work with world-class professionals in a multi-cultural environment. 

     

    “At ASTRI, we seek to address pain points in society, and we want to support the Hong Kong community at this challenging time which has left many out of work, including young people who are the most vulnerable to rising unemployment,” said Mr Hugh Chow, ASTRI Chief Executive Officer. “Offering the new graduates an opportunity to kickstart their careers in the prevailing difficult climate, is a way we make positive impact on our society,” he added. 

     

    ASTRI Chief Operating Officer, Dr Martin Szeto said: “Talent is key to a thriving innovation and technology (I&T) ecosystem, and over the years ASTRI has nurtured a quality pool of talents in applied research and I&T. It is through collaborative partnerships with government, academia, financial and industry institutions.”  

     

    ASTRI Chief Technology Officer, Dr Lucas Hui said, “Young adults are the backbone of every society contributing to the success of our future economy. ASTRI not only makes an impact on society through applied research, we can also add value to our economy by nurturing the next generation. Over the years ASTRI has had many talent exchanges and internships.” 

     

    This Programme adds to ASTRI’s numerous talent development initiatives. Since 2016, ASTRI and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) have jointly provided the FinTech Career Accelerator Scheme. It cultivates future leaders necessary to sustain Hong Kong’s banking, finance and business services. It adds to preserve Hong Kong’s competitiveness as an international finance hub. Over 500 interns have participated in the last four years. In 2020 the HKMA received more than 1,400 applications, nearly double the joiners a year before.  

    ASTRI also offers a three-month blockchain accelerator programme, in partnership with the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park and Molecular Hub. In 2020, ASTRI Summer Internships received 43 university students from Hong Kong and abroad.

    ASTRI sets up joint innovation lab with railway operator for smarter railway

  • [Hong Kong, 7 April 2020] The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) has kicked off a significant initiative that will see the railway system in Hong Kong become smarter and safer.

    ASTRI will explore innovations that will apply its award-winning technology solutions in a collaboration with MTR Corporation. The two parties last Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish the MTR ASTRI Joint Railway Innovation Laboratory.

    ASTRI Chief Executive Officer Mr Hugh Chow said: “ASTRI pursues innovation that enhances Hong Kong’s technology-based industries and improves the lives of its residents – and that includes how they get to work or go about for leisure. The MOU will set in motion far-reaching opportunities as ASTRI’s award-winning research and innovation will be put to real-life use cases to help the city’s railway operator enhance efficiency and productivity.”

    Appointment of New Directors of ASTRI Board

    ASTRI wins two Awards at Prestigious Hong Kong Awards for Industries 2019

  • [Hong Kong, 3 December 2019] The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) Company Limited received two awards at the prestigious Hong Kong Awards for Industries (HKAI) 2019 for the latest technologies. The Awards presentation ceremony was officiated by Dr Bernard Chan, JP, Under Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, and Ms Salina Yan, JP, Director-General of Trade and Industry.

    The two HKAI Awards are: (i) Equipment and Machinery Design Award for the Biometrics Optical See Through Head Mounted Display, jointly with ASTRI’s industry partner Profit Peak Hong Kong Holdings Limited; and (ii) Design Certificate of Merit for the Fast Multi-Focus Automatic Inspection Equipment for Optical Communication Components, jointly with ASTRI’s industry partner O-Net Technologies (Group) Limited.

    Mr Hugh Chow, Chief Executive Officer, Dr Martin Szeto, Chief Operating Officer, and Dr Chen Jung Tsai, Acting Director of IoT and Sensors Technology Division, represented ASTRI at the HKAI Awards ceremony.

    Biometrics Optical See Through Head Mounted Display

    The head mounted display features a partially transparent display, with eye gaze tracking capability for use in the human computer interface system and iris recognition for individualized interface and biometrics security. The technology can have wide-ranging applications in real life, such as allowing the use to issue computer commands using eye gaze.

    The device employs a full HD micro-display projection system which can enable small size spectacle-based head mount display. Its 60 degrees field of view is among the widest available for microdisplay-based projector HMD. The low build of materials cost of the HMD system is one of its major advantages. The device is at prototype stage with prospective business customers for testing and evaluation.

    Fast Multi-Focus Automatic Inspection Equipment for Optical Communication Components

    The product has a unique technology for the specialized inspection of optical communication component. It is particularly useful in ensuring quality of optical fibre connectors, where defects in the ceramic component surface would impact communications efficiency. By using high-resolution and high-speed focusing liquid lens, it is capable of detecting all kinds of defects in the production line. It performs inspection within a few seconds with micrometer resolution and the inspection result can be analysed in real time.

    Moreover, the product helps to reduce QC workload by providing higher level automation in production lines involving component surface quality control and component shape, colour marks and tilting inspection.

    ASTRI Inspires a “Smart Future for All” at the Technovation Summit 2019

  • [Hong Kong, 25 November 2019]  At the Technovation Summit 2019, organized by the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI), more than 30 technology experts, entrepreneurs and top-level executives joined Mr Nicholas W Yang, GBS, JP, Secretary for Innovation and Technology to explore what a smart future holds in store for Hong Kong.

     

    “Today, Hong Kong is facing big challenges from the global trade war and internal social unrest.  Yet, the Government remains fully committed to developing innovation and technology here in Hong Kong, using innovation and technology as a key economic and social driver to help improve our citizens’ daily lives and diversify our economy,” said Mr Yang.

     

    Acknowledging the important role of ASTRI in collaboration with its industry partners, Mr Sunny Lee, JP, ASTRI Board Chairman said, “It is through working together, and by bringing different technologies to the same place, that we will deliver the best outcome for talents, entrepreneurs and enterprises, and ultimately every Hongkonger and global citizen.”

The event, hosted by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, is one of  Asia’s leading Information and Communications Technology (ICT) event which explores exciting impacts of next-generation ICTs in various industries, as well as trends in the dynamic and fast-growing ICT market.

    At the PT EXPO China 2019, ASTRI adopts the theme “Embracing 5G for Innovation and Intelligent Connectivity”. ASTRI is showcasing technologies behind innovative solutions that enhance the competitive strengths of enterprises across Hong Kong, the Great Bay Area and international markets:

    1ASTRI end-to-end 5G systems supporting stand-alone (SA) and Non-standalone (NSA) networksASTRI partnered with Anktion (Fujian) Technology Co., Ltd to demonstrate data streaming with commercial 5G smartphone on its end-to-end 5G base station and 5G Core system.

    –    ASTRI’s latest 5G base station solution is on NXP LX2160a platform, which provides a low power and cost-efficient solution for sub-6GHz, 100MHz bandwidth, 4×4 MIMO base station products. The solution has been integrated with Remote Radio Units (RRU) from multiple vendors including Anktion. The solution supports both Standalone (SA) and Non-Standalone (NSA) 3GPP standards with third parties Protocol Stack (PS) software. The highly programable solution can be customized to drive different classes of base station platform such as standalone small cells and O-RAN white box hardware.

    –    ASTRI’s 5G Core is based on Intel x86 platform, and 3GPP Rel. 15 complied with the compelling performance – processing over 200Gbps throughput on standard servers featuring two scalable Intel Xeon processors.

     

    2Smart mobility technologiesASTRI’s smart mobility technologies covers a wide range of usage scenarios, on Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X), Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) and other Intelligent Transport System (ITS) services.  ASTRI and HKT are working closely on realising the Smart Mobility Technologies in Hong Kong.

     

    3Intelligent Blockchain-based IoT PlatformThe Hong Kong SAR government has stepped up its Smart City development efforts in recent years. Aligned with the increasing trends to leverage shared data, China Mobile Hong Kong and ASTRI have partnered to introduce industry pioneer application of Blockchain-based Internet of Things (IoT) technology. The platform uses secured data exchange for data provider to share IoT data with integrity. Through connecting the data providers and consumers, the platform can monetise and strategically exploit the potentially enormous value of the vast amount of IoT data. The platform can help companies and individuals to unleash huge business potential by acting as a trusted intermediary to offer data exchange with integrity among third parties.

     

    4Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) ChipThis demonstration showcases the latest low-cost, low-power NB-IoT chip solutions for a wide range of 3GPP-compliant low-cost and low-power IoT services. ASTRI’s NB-IoT chip adopts a unique polar transmitter architecture and integrates on-chip high efficiency CMOS power amplifier, power management unit and digitally controlled crystal oscillator.。

     

    5LoRaWAN ApplicationASTRI’s LoRaWAN system can use internal batteries to power the sensors, solving the problem of data collection in remote areas (no power, no solar energy). It has the characteristics of low power consumption, long transmission distance and easy installation. It can work continuously for 3 to 5 years depending on the internal battery. This project is supported by Hong Kong Water Supplies Department (WSD) and Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD).
    6Smartphone SpectrometerASTRI’s smartphone spectrometer becomes a powerful molecular analytical tool to ordinary consumers. It can obtain the spectrum with a snapshot and analyze the food composition or material quality conveniently.

     

    74Kx2K UHD Augmented Reality Head Mounted DisplayASTRI’s 4Kx2K UHD Augmented Reality Head Mounted Display (AR HMD) offers unprecedented experience to users by the way that the display content superimposes over the real world. The complete AR HMD solution combines MAY Display Co. Ltd’s world first true 4Kx2K LCoS panel with ASTRI’s reference optical design to provide an industry-leading 70-degree-wide field of view. With this solution, ASTRI’s AR HMD provides the consumers an extraordinary product experience across different user scenarios in a variety of application areas such as education, industrial and manufacturing, museum, engineering, retail and advertising.

     

    PT EXPO China 2019 will be held from October 31 to November 3 in Beijing, China, showcasing a world of 5G and other next-gen ICTs.     ASTRI Announces Appointment of New Chairman

  • [Hong Kong, 17 October 2019] Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) today (17 October) announced the appointment of Ir Sunny Lee Wai-kwong, JP as the new Chairman of the Board for a two-year term effective 21 October 2019.

    Mr Lee is succeeding Mr Wong Ming-yam, SBS, JP, who has been serving as the Board Chairman of ASTRI since 2013.

    “I am deeply honoured to have been appointed as ASTRI’s new Chairman,” said Mr Lee. “It is indeed a uniquely empowering role with an organisation that has immense importance for the future of our city and our next generations. I look forward to working closely with my fellow Board members and the ASTRI management led by CEO Mr Hugh Chow.”

    “With the Government’s policy support and financial commitment towards innovation and technology, I envisage an exciting time ahead as ASTRI continues to build world-class technologies that put Hong Kong on the global map of innovation,” Mr Lee added.

    Mr Lee is a veteran in innovation and technology leadership, with over 30 years of experience in business and technology management in Hong Kong and abroad. He is currently Vice‑President (Administration) of the City University of Hong Kong, responsible for a portfolio of central administration functions.

    Over his distinguished tech-focused career across multiple sectors, Mr Lee was Executive Director, Information Technology (IT) for the Hong Kong Jockey Club and Chief Information Officer of The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited, with overall responsibility for IT strategy and innovation. Previously, he was Vice President and Systems Director of Bank of America in Hong Kong, where he was instrumental in building up the bank’s IT capabilities to support its business expansion in Asia. Mr Lee has also held key IT positions in the financial, management consulting and manufacturing industries in the US.

    Mr Lee is a graduate of Cornell University where he studied for both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering.

    In congratulating Mr Lee on his appointment, the out-going Chairman Mr Wong said, “It has indeed been my honour and privilege to have served as ASTRI’s Chairman.  In the past six years, I have witnessed tremendous growth and development of ASTRI, all of which has contributed to the innovation and technology leadership ASTRI enjoys today.     ASTRI drives forward 5G + C-V2X + AI innovation and transformation with Intel technology

  • [27 June 2019, Hong Kong] At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Shanghai 2019, Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute(ASTRI) revealed their collaborations with Intel on 5G Standalone (SA) Core Network and Roadside Edge AI (Artificial Intelligence) for C-V2X (Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything) that power the new era of network transformation with the compelling capabilities of 5G, C-V2X and AI working together.

    ASTRI’s 5G Standalone (SA) Core Network at 200Gbps on Intel Architecture

    5G networks aim to provide diversified services. In 3GPP Release 15 standards, the 5G new Standalone (SA) core network enables a high degree of flexibility to meet application and service requirements. In fact, the Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) services have very high requirements on traffic capacity and data rate (as much as 1000x comparing to 4G).  The new 5G SA core network requires significantly higher capacity, throughput performance and scalability to meet the challenging requirements for 5G.

    ASTRI and Intel have collaborated on the research, development and optimisation of 5G SA Core Network, especially on the User Plane Function (UPF) throughput, to meet 5G requirements. The collaboration makes it possible for, on a single sever, over 200Gbps throughput to be processed by ASTRI’s 5G UPF without packet loss. The key capabilities and elements to deliver breakthrough performance in the 5G Core Network include:

    • The UPF of ASTRI’s 5G SA Core Network can achieve high per-core performance
    • Dynamic Device Personalisation (DDP) technology on Intel® Ethernet Network Adapters is utilised to achieve fine-grade load balancing to allow throughput scale up linearly with additional CPU cores
    • ASTRI 5G SA Core Network can scale down to a single hardware platform for small scale deployments, or scale out and distributed in cloud architecture

    ASTRI and Intel continue the R&D collaboration working closely on ASTRI’S 5G SA core network, such as supporting the N9 interface for mobile edge and additional Service- Based Network Functions, to enable a variety of network topologies to transform mobile core network to cater different 5G applications and scenarios.

    Edge Intelligence and C-V2X Transforming Smart Mobility and Network Infrastructure

    ASTRI and Intel collaborated to enable edge AI and visual-sensing capabilities for evolving next-generation smart roadside Infrastructure. The initial focus will be on enabling the real-time object recognition by ASTRI’s C-V2X Edge Software solution to detect imminent danger on roads and issue real-time alerts (like pedestrian crossing) to the respective drivers via C-V2X communications between vehicles and roadside infrastructure.

    In addition to the low-latency C-V2X communications, the C-V2X Edge Software demands high performance computing, AI and visual data processing to achieve end-to-end low latency. The Smart Roadside Computing Unit is powered by Intel® Xeon® D-2100 processors, delivering Intel’s ground-breaking data centre processor architecture in a form factor optimised for cloud edge computing solutions. It brings the architectural innovations of the Intel Xeon Scalable platform to a system-on-a-chip (SoC) processor for low-power, high-density, small footprint solutions, integrating essential network, security, and acceleration capabilities. The AI and visual data processing in the Smart Roadside Computing Unit is accelerated by Intel® ™ Myriad™ X Visual Processing Unit (VPU) and OpenVINO™ toolkit.

  • Hong Kong’s first application of IoT and Blockchain technology demonstrated during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Shanghai 2019

    [Hong Kong, 26 June 2019] The Hong Kong SAR Government has stepped up its Smart City development efforts in recent years. Aligned with the increasing trends to leverage shared data, China Mobile Hong Kong and Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) have partnered to introduce Hong Kong’s first application of Blockchain-based Internet of Things (IoT) technology. China Mobile Group’s OneNET IoT Platform and ASTRI’s Blockchain solution come together for a combined application that is being demonstrated for the first time during Mobile World Congress (MWC) Shanghai 2019 from 26-28 June 2019.

    For the first time ever, the power of Blockchain technology is being applied to an IoT application whereby data is collected and stored in real-time – making it safer, traceable and verifiable. The conventional, centralised system of IoT data collection and storage doesn’t use any encryption, making it vulnerable to attack or tampering. However, with the distributed data storage method of Blockchain, encryption protects the data from tampering. Its traceable features ensure stability and security of data. Combined together, Blockchain and IoT address supervision problems, reduce cost of operations, facilitating a wide of applications in everyday life. Overall, the solution can significantly help the development of Smart City.

    China Mobile Hong Kong and ASTRI have been invited to showcase the IoT and Blockchain technology at MWC Shanghai, organised by GSM Association (GSMA) from 26-28 June 2019. Simulated data is collected from vehicles, smart lampposts and parking lots, and transferred to China Mobile Group OneNET’s equipment management and applied development open source platform. The data is then stored and processed by ASTRI’s intelligent IoT and Blockchain technology platform with full-proof tamper protection. When visitors request access to IoT data from touch-screen computers or smartphones, the system makes a record, making sure the user can only access the data he/she is permitted to view, and the data source is reliable. At MWC Shanghai 2019, ASTRI and CMHK will also showcase applications of various sensors in an urban environment and data collection from different sources in future smart city environment. Visitors will understand the use of the IoT and Blockchain technology and personally experience its applications.

    1. 5G end-to-end system (5G C-RAN base station and 5G Core)

    ASTRI will demonstrate live 5G connection on a commercial 5G-enabled smartphone, using its end-to-end 5G C-RAN and Mobile Core system. Using Intel Xeon processors, ASTRI’s network design supports up to 2 Gbps throughput with four spatial layers in sub-6GHz spectrum. The solution has been adopted by a series of 5G network equipment manufacturers based in the Mainland and overseas. The solution also enables public and private network builders to introduce 5G-powered Smart City applications for smart living, smart manufacturing and smart mobility.

    2. 5G standalone Core Network at 200Gbps (jointly with Intel)

    This joint demonstration will showcase the compelling performance of 5G core network, processing over 200Gbps throughput on standard servers featuring two scalable Intel Xeon processors.

    3. Edge Computing and AI for road safety (jointly with Intel)

    This joint demonstration will showcase a smart roadside infrastructure with artificial intelligence and visual sensing capabilities. ASTRI’s C-V2X Edge Software, deployed on Intel’s Smart Roadside Computing Unit, can recognise vehicles, people and objects in real time. By issuing real time alerts, this solution will minimise accidents and greatly improve road safety.

    4. Smart mobility technologies (jointly with HKT)

    ASTRI’s smart mobility technologies covers a wide range of usage scenarios, on Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X), Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) and other Intelligent Transport System (ITS) services.  ASTRI and HKT are working closely on realising the Smart Mobility Technologies in Hong Kong.

    5. Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) Chip (jointly with Keysight)

    This demonstration showcases the latest low-cost, low-power NB-IoT chip solutions for a wide range of 3GPP-compliant low-cost and low-power IoT services. ASTRI’s NB-IoT chip adopts a unique polar transmitter architecture and integrates on-chip high efficiency CMOS power amplifier, power management unit and digitally controlled crystal oscillator.

    6. Biometric Optical See Through (OST) Head Mount Display (HMD)

    ASTRI’s Biometric OST HMD is the world’s first turnkey solution to integrate extremely high image quality, smooth human machine interaction and security identification features. Its see-through feature plus high display image quality provides vivid visual experience; iris recognition feature performs high security biometric authentication, and eye-gazing tracking capability provides accurate focus point detection and high user flexibility.

    7. Virtual Mobile Core Network auto scaling with ONAP DataLake (jointly with QCT and CMRI)

    ASTRI’s Virtual Mobile Core Network is integrated and deployed on top of QCT’s Next Generation Central Office (NGCO) virtualized infrastructure with telemetry running on a x86 server, with OpenStack services, VNF-ASTRI EPC, and ONAP information injected into the ONAP DataLake.  This architecture enables auto scaling by using the ONAP DataLake with analytics, which can provide intelligent scale-in and scale-out mechanisms for virtual mobile core network operations.

    8. Intelligent Blockchain-based IoT Platform (jointly with CMHK at GSMA Innovation City)

    As Hong Kong largest R&D institute, ASTRI collaborates with China Mobile Hong Kong (CMHK) to bring the Blockchain IoT to the live network with CMHK’s latest IoT management system – OneNET. The platform uses secured data exchange for data provider to share IoT data with integrity. Through connecting the data providers and consumers, the platform can monetise and strategically exploit the potentially enormous value of the vast amount of IoT data.  The key issue in transforming IoT data to business value is addressed. The platform can help companies and individuals to unleash huge business potential by acting as a trusted intermediary to offer data exchange with integrity among third parties.
