Since 2016, the ASTRI Smart Mobility Technologies (SMT) team has been dedicated to research and development of the smart mobility plan for Hong Kong. We established the 14km Shatin V2X Trial Site in 2019, to support R&D of vehicle-to-everything (V2X) and connected autonomous vehicles (CAV) technologies. Presently, V2X and CAV commercialization is hindered by the high hardware costs of infrastructure deployment. Due to economical considerations, V2X and CAV infrastructure can only be deployed at selected critical sites in densely populated urban areas. Recent development of low earth orbit (LEO) satellites commercialization opens new opportunities for satellite-enabled smart mobility solutions. To sustain continuous V2X and CAV services between these sites, we propose to study the LEO satellite-enabled V2X and CAV technologies, that provides flexible service coverage, infrastructure cost-efficiency, and global availability. In this project, project team will 1. Develop the theoretical relation model between LEO Satellites’ movement with smart mobility application system; 2. Design and implement the smart-mobility-purpose satellite simulator software; 3. Develop the feaibility plan for smart-mobility-purpose satellite design and development. This project is supported by Hong Kong Aerospace Technology Group. Deliverables of this project will initiate reference designs for smart-mobility-purpose LEO satellites, to be implemented in further collaborations. It will be an important step for V2X and CAV technology commercialization and the Hong Kong smart mobility roadmap.
