The proposed project aims to develop a novel human-computer interaction method based on hand detecting and tracking algorithm with multi-sensor fusion, paving the way for the application of immersive virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies in Hong Kong. The algorithm allows users to interact with display devices, including monitors, projections, etc., in high dimensions at low cost by tracking the user's hand and perceiving the environment in 3D. The proposed methodology is divided into two parts, hand tracking and display localization. Hand tracking includes multi-camera based hand detection, joint localization and gesture understanding, which will be mainly done with computer vision and AI algorithms. Display localization includes image-based auto-calibration and coordinate mapping, which will be mainly done using image recognition.
