Smartphones are getting powerful enough, and spectrometers are getting small enough that you could package them together for a really useful tool. The fusion of smartphone and mini-spectrometer will definitely open up a new market of consumer electronics. One can picture such a portable and user-friendly smartphone-spectrometer system that can tell you what you are looking at right there at the scene. Its potential applications in food sensing, environmental sensing, and even body sensing just meet the increasing demands for healthy living. In this project, we aim to develop a consumer spectroscopy platform on smartphone, including: 1. A software (App) on smartphone, with the algorithms to convert the interference pattern to the normalized optical spectrum with the predefined calibration, and to convert the normalized optical spectrum to the values of color parameters, including color temperature (CCT); 2. A mini-spectrometer module embedded in smartphone capable of color temperature measurement, with miniatured size. And such developments are based on the convenience and power of smartphone spectrometer for beyond-human-eyes inspections of fine colors under different illuminations, and identifications of chemical compositions. With the embedded smartphone spectroscopy platform, the smartphone will be even more smart in dealing with multiple consumer applications such as: fine color inspection; jewelry and antiques; textiles and fashions; food and wine; health and cosmetics.
