Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) was founded by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2000 with the mission of enhancing Hong Kong’s competitiveness through applied research.
ASTRI’s core R&D competence in various areas is grouped under five Technology Divisions: Advanced Electronic Components and Systems; Artificial Intelligence and Trust Technologies; Communications Technologies; IoT Sensing and AI Technologies; and Intelligent Perception and Control Technologies. It is applied across six core areas which are Smart City, Financial Technologies, New Industrialisation and Intelligent Manufacturing, Digital Health, Application Specific Integrated Circuits and Metaverse.
Over the years, ASTRI has nurtured a pool of research, I&T talents and received numerous international awards for its pioneering innovations as well as outstanding business and community contributions. ASTRI has transferred about 1,600 technologies to the industry and has been granted close to 1,200 patents in the Chinese Mainland, the United States, and other countries.

Summer Internship Programme 2026
The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI), in collaboration with the Nano and Advanced Materials Institute (NAMI), invites talented undergraduate and postgraduate students to join the ASTRI Summer Internship Programme 2026.
This programme offers an exceptional opportunity to gain hands-on applied R&D experience, work alongside award-winning scientists and researchers, and immerse yourself in a dynamic, cross-cultural innovation environment. It is ideal for students aspiring to build a career in applied research, innovation, and technology development.

Programme Overview
The ASTRI Summer Internship Programme is an 8-week internship running from June to August 2026, designed primarily for students majoring in STEM disciplines. Interns will be assigned to applied research projects aligned with their academic background, interests, and potential.
Participants may be placed under either:
ASTRI Technology Divisions Track, focusing on applied information and communications technologies, or
The NAMI Discovery Track, focusing on nanotechnology and advanced materials research.

ASTRI Technology Divisions Track
Interns will gain hands-on experience within one of ASTRI’s five Technology Divisions (TDs), which form the cornerstones of the Information and Communications Technologies R&D Centre (ICT RDC) initiated by the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) of the HKSAR Government.
ASTRI’s core R&D competences are applied across six core areas which are Smart City, Financial Technologies, New Industrialisation and Intelligent Manufacturing, Digital Health, Application Specific Integrated Circuits, and Metaverse.
Technology Divisions include:
- Artificial Intelligence and Trust Technologies (AITT)
- Advanced Electronic Components and Systems (AECS)
- Communications Technologies (CT)
- IoT Sensing and AI Technologies (IOTSAI)
- Intelligent Perception and Control Technologies (IPCT)
Students majoring in non-STEM disciplines may also be considered for internship opportunities within ASTRI’s corporate and headquarters functions.

NAMI Discovery Track
The NAMI Discovery Track provides selected undergraduate and master’s students in Science, Engineering, or related disciplines with in-depth exposure to nanotechnology and advanced materials through hands-on research and development projects.
Interns will learn from NAMI’s award-winning materials researchers and work on emerging technologies that support their academic development and future careers in technology research.
Based on their background and interests, participants will be assigned to projects within the following technology divisions:
- Electronic Materials (ELEM)
- Battery Materials (BATM)
- Biomaterials (BIOM)
- Construction Materials (CONM)
- Functional Polymer (FPOL)
Requirements
- Undergraduate or postgraduate students in STEM or related disciplines
- Expected graduation in 2027, 2028, or 2029
- Strong interest in applied R&D and the Innovation & Technology (I&T) industry
- Creative, open-minded, and forward-thinking
- Fluent in written and spoken English
