Transportation system is one of the most important urban infrastructures. People’s daily commute, travel, or business trip highly depend on road/highway, trail/subway, or airport, etc. The inspection and maintenance strongly impact on traffic safety and efficiency. Thus, it is more and more valued by government. However, transportation inspection is mostly done by human, which results in low efficiency and low accuracy. So a moving sensing device mounted on vehicle is needed. One of the major issues in moving sensing is the noise caused by vibration, velocity, and orientation variance while vehicle is moving. In order to increase the measurement accuracy, existing moving sensing solution need to install TOF sensor, GNS, or do some modifications on the vehicle, for example, installing encoders. Thus, the installation is complex, which leads to high cost. In this project, the project team will develop an inertial aided multi-sensor system for high-speed moving sensing. This inertial system will calculate vehicle motion, to compensate the noise caused by vibration, velocity variance, and increase the measurement accuracy. This inertial system can integrate with different sensing module, e.g., LiDAR, or 3D laser profiler, to realize inspection in different scenarios (road, railway, or tunnel).
