Two ASTRI internship programmes met with enthusiastic response More than 2,400 applications including students from MIT and Oxford

[Hong Kong, 12 April 2022] With the summer holidays coming up, many university students are looking for internship opportunities to better understand and equip themselves for their future jobs. The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) has always strived to fulfil its mission of nurturing the next generation of innovation and technology talents. For the summer holidays this year, ASTRI has planned to organise the “Undergraduate Summer Internship Programme”. In addition, it has established the “FinTech Future Leader Academy” to provide summer internship opportunities for second-year and third-year undergraduates, as well as postgraduate students majoring in innovation and technology. Interns under the programme will participate in scientific and fintech research and development. The two programmes have received a total of 2,464 applications through recruitment drives at various Hong Kong universities, as well as 28 renowned overseas universities. Interviews was conducted to select 75 candidates for a not more than 8-weeks internship at ASTRI from June to August.

Recruitment has been incredibly well-received this year. A total of 1,932 local students from (in no particular order) the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, City University of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University have applied for the two programmes. After the interview, 26 students have been selected to participate in the “Undergraduate Summer Internship Programme”, while 7 students have been selected to participate in the summer internship at the “FinTech Future Leader Academy”.

The programmes are met many of the applicants hail from various renowned universities such as MIT, Harvard University, the University of Chicago, the University of California, Berkeley, and New York University in the United States, as well as University College London, the University of Cambridge, and the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. And also with enthusiastic response at overseas universities as well. From the 532 overseas applications received, ASTRI has selected 30 students to participate in the “Undergraduate Summer Internship Programme” and 12 students to participate in the summer internship at the “FinTech Future Leader Academy”.

Through the “FinTech Future Leader Academy” established this year, ASTRI hopes to collaborate with Hong Kong enterprises to provide summer internship opportunities for second-year and third-year undergraduates, as well as postgraduate students in fintech research and development. These enterprises include Bank of China (Hong Kong), China Life Insurance (Overseas), Cyberport, Hong Kong Monetary Authority, Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, IBM, Microsoft among others. Through the ASTRI internship, students will learn about central bank digital currency (CBDC), federated learning systems, artificial intelligence in analytics, chatbots and more.

ASTRI CEO Dr. Denis Yip says, “ASTRI has announced many relevant development projects in conjunction with the proposal outlined in the Fourteenth Five-Year Plan to develop the Greater Bay Area as an international innovation hub. In order to resolve the shortage of talents in the fintech industry, we have established the ‘FinTech Future Leader Academy’. Through the challenging research and development projects offered, we hope that students can obtain practical experience in preparation for a career in the industry, working towards the advancement of the Hong Kong “Fintech 2025″ Strategy.”
