Keysight Technologies Collaborates with ASTRI to Introduce Industry’s First NB-IoT Design and Simulation Solution

Highlights:

  • Allows designers to develop and verify Narrow Band Internet of Things (NB-IoT) systems with ease
  • Works with Keysight EEsof EDA’s SystemVue simulation platform
  • Adopted by the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) to simulate an NB-IoT transceiver; simulation results output to 3GPP to help optimise the standard

[19 December 2016, Hong Kong] Keysight Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: KEYS) recently introduced the industry’s first Narrow Band Internet of Things (NB-IoT) design and simulation solution. The solution, a NB-IoT design and verification library, dramatically increases system architect and baseband physical layer (PHY) designer productivity by providing ready-to-use reference intellectual property for NB-IoT technology research.

Keysight Technologies is closely collaborating with Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) on the development of RF transceiver architectures. This includes defining an RF and baseband interface and evaluating system performance and functionality for a NB-IoT terminal chipset. This was accomplished, in part, by successfully leveraging ASTRI’s existing NB-IoT solutions. ASTRI has also contributed to a number of future opportunities, including proposals to the 3GPP standard body for the optimisation of NB-IoT specifications.

As part of the 3GPP Rel-13 standard, NB-IoT is a narrow-band radio technology specifically designed to handle a higher number of devices and conserve battery life while keeping device costs down. With Keysight’s new solution, system architects are now able to see system-level effects of NB-IOT algorithms and models, impairments, interferers, and bit error rate, just to name a few.

Keysight’s NB-IoT solution is part of the existing W1918 LTE-A Baseband Library and consists of source code, models, subsystems, simulation examples and infrastructure components. Engineers can use the NB-IoT solution with Keysight’s SystemVue electronic system level simulation platform to ensure rapid development and verification of high-quality advanced digital modems. The means engineers can now easily design their NB-IoT system with all of the blocks necessary to build a signal source, baseband transaction, RF transceiver and make signal analysis. The NB-IoT solution also provides modeling examples that can be easily re-designed to achieve optimal performance for comparison of different design approaches.

Building close relationships with early industry developers such as ASTRI, Keysight was able to validate the product’s effectiveness in streamlining the development and verification cycles. ASTRI leveraged the Keysight NB-IoT solution to develop an RF transceiver architecture and RF and baseband interface, as well as to verify system performance and perform a functional evaluation of NB-IoT terminal chips. Keysight’s solution was also used to help the 3GPP standard body further optimise the NB-IoT specification.
