ASTRI Hosts Industry and University Collaboration Forum 2015 to Share Latest Technological Research and Development and Facilitate Collaboration

[Hong Kong, 18 November 2015] With staunch support from Innovation and Technology Commission and 54 supporting organizations, Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Institute (ASTRI) hosted its annual signature event – Industry and University Collaboration Forum 2015 at Grand Hall, Phase 3 of Science Park today.  The Forum received an overwhelming response with over 400 participants from various sectors and universities.

The Forum was kicked off with an opening ceremony officiated by the Hon. Mr. Nicholas Yang, JP, Advisor to the Chief Executive on Innovation and Technology cum Member of the Executive Council, HKSARG, Ms. Annie Choi, JP, Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Mr. Zhi-ming Liu, Deputy Inspector, Department of Educational, Scientific Technological Affairs, Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong SAR, Mr. Ming-yam Wong, BBS, JP, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ASTRI and Dr. Frank Tong Chief Executive Officer of ASTRI.

In his welcoming remarks, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ASTRI Mr. Ming-yam Wong, BBS, JP said that he was very delighted to see the establishment of the Innovation and Technology Bureau.  He believed that the implementation of China’s 13th 5-Year Plan and the One Belt One Road initiative would bring about tremendous demand for advanced technologies.  By working together, both ASTRI and its strategic partners would be able to seize the opportunities to unleash the power of innovation and technology.

Advisor to the Chief Executive on Innovation and Technology cum Member of the Executive Council, HKSARG Mr. Nicholas Yang, JP said in his opening remarks, “Innovation is about the ability to embrace failure and wait for success. It is also about achieving collective excellence and shared values and doing good to society. In order to elevate ourselves and stay one step ahead of competition, we have to transform Hong Kong from service economy to knowledge-based economy through innovation and technology.”

At the panel discussion facilitated by ASTRI’s Chief Marketing Officer Dr. Jack Lau, five distinguished panelists including Ms. Cally Chan, Managing Director, HPE Hong Kong, Mr. Francis Chan, CCB Senior Superintendent (Technology Crime & Intelligence), Hong Kong Police Force, Ms. Winnie Ho, Deputy Head, Energizing Kowloon East Office, Mr. Josiah Lam, Senior Manager of Financial Infrastructure Development Division, Hong Kong Monetary Authority and Dr. Enboa Wu, Associate Vice-President for Knowledge Transfer, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, shared their insights on various topics including commercial opportunities through collaboration, cyberspace security, development of smart cities, latest cyber monetary systems and the values of knowledge transfer from universities.

The Forum also kept audience abreast of ASTRI’s technological development and application in four areas, namely Financial Technologies, Intelligent Manufacturing, Next Generation Network and Medical and Health as well as that of the National Engineering Research Centre for Application Specific Integrated Circuit System (Hong Kong Branch) in the themed talks by different R & D experts of ASTRI.

Another highlight of the Forum was the exhibition which showcased and demonstrated the latest technologies including Intelligent Head Up Display and Mobile Heart Health Monitoring System, to name but a few.  Fellows of the inaugural ASTRI Innovation Runway (AIR programme), which aims at providing comprehensive pre-incubation support to young entrepreneurs also displayed their innovative projects at the Forum.
