ASTRI Wins Award for 4K2K AR/VR Compatible Head-Mounted Display (HMD) with Sensing at Hong Kong ICT Awards 2022

[Hong Kong, 21 November 2022] The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) has won a Smart Business (Emerging Technologies) Silver Award for its 4K2K AR/VR Compatible Head-Mounted Display (HMD) at the Hong Kong Information and Communications Technology Awards (ICT Awards) 2022.

Hong Kong ICT Awards 2022 Awards Presentation Ceremony was held on 16 November 2022, our Associate Senior Director Mr. Kenny Chan and Associate Principal Engineer Ms. Wendy Zhang from Emerging Sensing and Display System division have represented at the ceremony, along with our Director Dr John Koo from Cyber-Physical Systems division who was appointed as a member of Steering Committee.

Upon hearing the good news of ASTRI’s team receiving award from Hong Kong ICT again, CEO Dr. Denis Yip wholeheartedly congratulated our researchers for their remarkable accomplishment and dedications: “We actively participate Hong Kong ICT Awards, with an aim to leverage this perfect platform for our teams to gain greater opportunity to build cooperation with partners, so as to achieve a commercialisation transition. To be sure, receiving the award will encourage all the researchers to work harder and strive for innovation and excellence in the future, to support Hong Kong to become an international I&T centre.”

Metaverse is the next generation of the internet, wherein Head Mounted Display performs as the human interface to connect the user between real world and virtual space. The displayed image quality, security level and human-machine interaction are three key factors for the measurement of the success of HMD. Benefitting from ASTRI’s patent-protected display and sensing technology, ASTRI has successfully developed AR/VR Compatible Head-Mounted Display (HMD) with unparalleled image display quality, biometric-based secure data protection, eye gaze tracking and gesture understanding enabled natural user human-machine interface.

ASTRI’s solution utilized the world’s first true 4K resolution LCoS micro-display (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) with high precision optics system to produce the real dual 4K image in crisp details, vivid colours, and stunning visuals. To meet the deep immersive experience of metaverse application, the solution can produce a large field of view (70 degrees in diagonal) virtual image in front of human eyes, opening a new window to exploring the world and being ready for both AR/VR applications.

Mr. Kenny Chan, the Associate Senior Director, Emerging Sensing and Display System division said: “It’s an inevitable trend that Metaverse enters into ordinary people’s day-to-day life, which definitely will boost the demand for high-end Head Mounted Display devices. ASTRI’s AR/VR Compatible Head-Mounted Display can be applied to digital transformation in industrial metaverse, this turnkey solution would cover from education, training, simulation all the way to operation assistance. We believe it would contribute to Hong Kong’s industrialisation transformation.”

The ASTRI R&D team members involved in developing the 4K2K AR/VR Compatible Head-Mounted Display (HMD) are Chan Kin Lung, Kenny, Zhang Wei, Wendy, Liu Dehua, Derek, Chan Kwok Chung, Calvin, Shen Shihui, Sultan Malik Saad and Tam Ming Wai Alwin.

Associate Senior Director Mr. Kenny Chan and Associate Principal Engineer Ms. Wendy Zhang from Emerging Sensing and Display System division have represented at the ceremony as delegates of their team.
