The introduction of Mobile WiMAX is creating new markets for mobile broadband wireless access. The Mobile WiMAX technologies provide IP-based application services, Quality of Service (QoS), robust security, user scalability and most importantly, seamless mobility handover. The Access Service Network Gateway (ASN-GW) plays a critical role in enabling these features, especially seamless mobility, in Mobile WiMAX system architecture. In current stage, local/China equipment vendors including Comba Telecom, Altai Technologies and Beijing Fiberhome, are mostly focusing on their WiMAX Base Stations (BTSs) development. To address the mobility requirements and the market needs, their product portfolio must have the ASN-GW, which can interwork with their Base Stations to form a real Mobile WiMAX system. This is essential for their success because service providers are only interested in integrated system with ASN-GW, BTS and management systems, but not only standalone BTS. The main reason is to avoid the risks and issues due to incompatibility and product support. There are strong market and critical technology needs by local/China equipment vendors for an ASN-GW platform when they complete their BTS development in the next one to two years. Local/China vendors will need an ASN-GW platform which can easily support not only the standard capabilities, but also the unique features of vendors’ BTSs, in a scalable and cost-effective way. ASTRI’s ASN-GW platform has two unique characteristics: (1) Rapid Customization to support multi-vendor/model BTSs and (2) Hybrid Radio Resource Control (RRC) architecture to enhance RRC performance. Such ASN-GW platform shall be licensed to Local/China small-to-medium sized vendors to integrate with their base stations – forming a complete Mobile WiMAX system solution and enhance the value of these equipment vendors. It is noticed that the market is lacking a suitable ASN-GW platform solution for Local/China vendors due to marketing and technical reasons. The local/China ASN-GW platform market is a unique niche market for ASTRI to participate in. Specifically, Altai Technologies has already shown their great interests and support in our ASN-GW platform by signing the LOIs with 10% contribution. There are also active discussions with Comba Telecom and Proxim Wireless in possible collaborations (with hardware and software platform) in this ASN-GW development. In addition to the market potentials of Mobile WiMAX, the developed gateway technologies could further be applied in future 4G standards like 3GPP-LTE and 3GPP2-UMB, which certainly helps Hong Kong to strengthen its advanced and leading wireless technology development in the world.
