This project aims to develop an ultra-efficient and reliable SiC based power module for traction application and coordinate the up-and-down stream industry partners / parties to generate a 3rd generation semiconductor ecosystem which can support Hong Kong re-industrialisation. ASTRI will build up the SiC power module and the gate drive unit with key technologies including: 1) gate drive unit with phase-leg short circuit protection function; 2) aluminum cladded copper wire connection between SiC dies and DBC, direct copper-to-copper ultrasonic welding between terminal copper busbars and DBC, integration of DBC and AlSiC baseplate (IBP); and 3) silver sintered joint between SiC dies and DBC. With these technologies, performance of SiC power module can be fully unleashed particularly the reliability towards cycle condition and failure of phase-leg short circuit. Reliability tests will be conducted on the developed module to verify the performance. It is foreseeable that a sharp increase of SiC power module demand will be encountered in a few years because of the electrification of vehicle worldwide. As SiC power modules can only be imported from the US, Europe and Japan at present, when there is a shortage of supply or even import control problems, it will hinder the development of related products and then affect the development of smart cities. Therefore, "Made in Hong Kong" power modules are becoming the focus of the industry's attention to avoid being restricted by these problems.
