While In lack of pre-caution, the firefighter would be in danger of unknown environment full of explosive gases. With only naked eyes and thermal imaging cameras, the concentrations of explosive gases are undetectable. And, conventional gas sensors cannot operate in remote sensing for pre-caution. In this project, a portable remote-gas-sensing device will be developed for the firefighters to take pre-cautions against explosive gases before entering a complex environment. The device, is a portable multispectral camera enhanced with active illuminations in IR range. It will provide forewarning of the presence of explosive gases, such as CH4 and CO, in the environment, allowing firefighters to plan and execute countermeasures at a safe distance. The success of such a development will be adopted as a new equipment by the firefighters in providing smarter and safer professional services. The remote-gas-sensing technologies can also be used for other applications of environmental monitoring.
