5G is envisioned to support unprecedented diverse applications and services with extremely heterogeneous performance requirements. Mission critical internet of things (IoT) is one of the three pillar use cases which enable wide range of applications including smart industries, cyber physical control, smart grid automation, traffic safety and control, collaborative robotics, as well as advanced automation and control. These new use cases impose enormous challenges to fulfill key performance requirements including precise clock synchronization, periodic deterministic communication support, new mechanisms for QoS (Quality of service) flows management, ultra-low end to end latency and very high service availability. To support ASTRI’s technology evolution, project team plans to develop 5G mission critical Internet of Things (IoT) solutions based on 3GPP release 16 technologies, including: MAC Procedures for 3GPP Rel.16 Mission Critical IoT Base Station Reference Design Integrated 5G Mission Critical IoT Platform for Smart Factory Applications Through this project, ASTRI can expand its 5G competence to enable more diversified applications, supporting industries to setup various mission critical IoT communications systems for private network deployment. These technologies have already attracted great interest from several companies (LENOVO, HBFEC, etc.). Leveraging the project results, ASTRI can benefit Hong Kong and regional wireless technology vendors by opening up high valued-added markets, and bringing vast potential for various commercial services and smart city applications.
