In this project, a reliable, safe, and eco-friendly power conversion system and battery pack for UPS and E-bike applications will be developed. It can give a fundamental solve of fire risk of lithium battery as well as environmental and human health hazards of lead acid battery based energy storage systems. Three new technologies will be researched and developed including: 1) Rack-mounted natural (RMN) cool design power conversion system based on heat pipe and multilevel modular power stage topology. Power module works under natural cool to avoid the failure of cooling fan and air filter in nowadays UPS system; 2) Two-dimensional power (2DP) control to increase light-load efficiency which is the most common loading condition of UPS; and 3) Low-cost high-current equalizer (LHE) and aqueous battery pack to achieve cells balanced high C-rate charging. With the successful development of the mentioned technologies, failure of UPS system due to cooling fan, air filter, and lithium battery can be eliminated; environmental and human health hazards caused by lead acid battery can be fundamentally solved. The project can strengthen the power electronics and battery technologies leadership of Hong Kong and tighten the collaboration with mainland China. It helps to develop a more reliability, efficient, health, and safe smart city.
