Mr Laifa FANG

There are now 20 water treatment works to supply fresh water in Hong Kong. Water quality monitoring is a requisite to keep the water clean and safe throughout the whole water treatment process. Currently, water quality measurement mainly depends on manual operation, which is very time-consuming. And there is a demand for an automated solution to achieve higher frequency, accuracy, and efficiency in water quality monitoring. In this project, we will develop an automation system for water quality monitoring. We will use robotics, Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to form an open platform for water quality monitoring. It will offer the capability to predict the quality trend and seasonality information with big data analysis technologies. This project will help reduce the daily workload of water science staff, improve efficiency and continuously monitor the water quality to ensure the safety of drinking water, thereby promoting the development of smart water technology in Hong Kong. We will collaborate with the Water Supplies Department (WSD) to conduct the field trial at one of WSD's Water Treatment Works. The developed technologies and project outcomes will be transferred to WSD to sustain the operation of the automation system.
