Artificial intelligence (AI), especially the deep-learning technology, is widely adopted in the manufacturing industry in order to reduce the manpower involved in daily operation. According to a market report published by MarketsandMarkets™ in 2019, AI in manufacturing market is expected to grow from USD 1.0 billion in 2018 to USD 17.2 billion by 2025, at a CAGR of 49.5% during the forecast period. However, the expanding applications for AI in the market create a shortage of qualified workers in the field. Such shortage has slowed hiring and impeded growth at some companies. It also slows the rate of diffusion of the new technology and any productivity that accompany it. To fill the vacancies in the labor market and to reduce the massive engineering efforts in AI development, this project aims to develop an automated AI generation system to automatically create AI solution for manufacturing processes. To achieve this goal, apart from developing the main AI generation system, the project team will develop two data engines to relax the data requirement in AI learning and a path planning engine to extend the applications of the automated AI generation system to robotic arm automation. Two manufacturing systems: Vision Guiding System for automatic pick & place system and Autonomous defect inspection systems are also proposed to verify the applications of the automated AI generation system on industry. The Government in recent years has been promoting “re-industrialization” to develop high value-added manufacturing industries in Hong Kong. This project will support the manufacturers to set up smart production lines in Hong Kong with lower operating costs and thresholds in AI development. Less land-intensive manufacturing industries such as electronics and semiconductor manufacturing could also benefit from the proposed solution. Following the “Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area”, the outcome of this project will help in accelerating the transformation and upgrading of traditional industries in Hong Kong and China.
