Description:

With the evolution from 5G to 6G, the demand for Internet of Things (IoT) devices and services is anticipated to increase significantly. However, the lack of global coverage hinders IoT’s mass adoption. Therefore, the emergence of non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) such as satellite networks solves the coverage issue and turns the IoT-NTN technology into a promising direction for industry. This project will develop the architecture and system design for ultra-low-power IoT-NTN Radio Frequency (RF) transceiver which is compatible with 3GPP Release 19 standard for 5G-A and 6G applications. Architecture design and system-level simulation for IoT-NTN RF transceiver will be performed to define the system and module specifications. Besides, a novel smart wake-up scheme with adaptive gain control will be introduced to decrease power consumption and improve overall performance. Finally, the circuit and layout design of the switching polar transmitter will be developed, obtaining both pre-simulation and post-simulation results. This seed project will provide the architecture and system-level solution for IoT-NTN RF transceiver toward future 6G applications and lay a solid foundation for the pipelined IoT-NTN RF transceiver development platform project. Moreover, it will help Hong Kong to pioneer the development of IoT-NTN technology with seamless coverage of IoT networks around the globe.
