Transport Department

The Transport Department is going to have a new vehicle examination centre in Tsing Yi, known as Transport Department Vehicle Examination Complex (TDVEC), which will be commissioned in 2021. Part of the TDVEC will be a training centre for vehicle testers who are working in various designated car testing centres. Currently, vehicle examination consists of abundant inspection/measurement steps and requires lots of data input works. It is time consuming and easily causes human errors due to complex processes. On the other hand, the associated trainings to vehicle testers are conducted by traditional teaching methods such as oral presentation and demonstration, which are not good ways to improve learning retention. In order to facilitate vehicle examination process and enhance the training effectiveness, we proposed to develop innovative technical solutions for vehicle examination by applying Augmented Reality (AR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies. The outcomes of this project include vehicle examination AR applications, AI for 3D scene understanding, an AR inspection and training system platform, which not only make a significant and immediate impact on vehicle examination industry but also enable AR inspection and AR training across a range of industries and thereby helps enterprises in digital transformation as well as the development of smart cities.
