Optical 2) New medical treatment software with efficient algorithm and shortened daily treatment period (<30 min.) for i. Amblyopia treatment ii. Binocular vision training 3) A highly-integrated medical goggle for advanced vision training with i. Binocular-control system ii. Optical-zoom function 4) Clinical test evaluation of BTD prototype on children and adults, including i. Competitiveness comparision with other market-available vision treatment products ii. Safety test evaluation iii. Compliance evaluation, in particular for home use 5) TWO patents i. Medical goggle with optical zoom and adjustable viewing angle ii. Goggle with adjustable mechanical feature for multi-users 6) TWO licensable medical treatment software in ARM/FPGA format i. Amblyopia treatment program ii. Binocular vision training program 5.1.2 IP Development and Patent Applications: Two patents and two software copyrights will be generated from this project. 1) Patent 1: Medical goggle with optical zoom and adjustable viewing angle i. Optical zoom lens design in compact size ii. Actuator design for variable viewing angle and variable display distance 2) Patent 2: Goggle with adjustable mechanical feature for multi-users i. Adjustable interpupillary distance (IPD) and head-size for different age-group users ii. Stand-alone, compact goggle mechanical design with good heat dissipation & light weight 3) Software copyright 1: Amblyopia treatment program with a series of NOISE functions* for BTD goggles in ARM/FPGA format 4) Software copyright 2: Binocular vision training program for BTD goggles in ARM/FPGA format *Remark: The Amblyopia treatment program developed in seed projects contains spatial frequency function and advanced searching algorithm only.

Amblyopia is a visual developmental disorder that cannot be corrected by refractive means. The traditional occlusion therapy has limited benefit for children and is found to be ineffective for adults. The occurrence rate of amblyopia is 3% worldwide. In China alone, there are more than 30 million adult amblyopes left untreated and more than 10 million children amblyopes. More than half of amblyopes have binocular vision disorder. We have completed a feasibility study of our amblyopia treatment system (ATS) in 2009. The computerized treatment program is based on an advanced perceptual learning model and is effective for both children and adults. It is a non-invasive amblyopia treatment method which helps to set up the neuro-pathway in the visual cortex of our brain. We propose to make it as a portable goggle as a brain training device (BTD). The objective of this project is to promote brain training for visual problem. We plan to develop a stand-alone goggle device with amblyopia treatment software and binocular vision training software. The goggle will be equipped with binocular control and optical zoom which cannot be found in any of the electronic goggles nowadays. A clinical test evaluation will be conducted.
