Digital Television Technology R&D Center, Tsinghua University Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation
This project aims to establish foundation and framework to engage close collaboration in a series of near term and strategic research and development programs and develop advanced multimedia broadcasting and communications technologies and intellectual properties (IPs) for China’s Digital Television technology and commercialization. A three-year R&D program shall be carried out through a joint R&D lab formed between ASTRI and Tsinghua University. By leveraging and combining wireless communication technical strength in Communications Technologies Group at ASTRI and Digital Terrestrial Mobile Broadcasting expertise of DTV R&D Center at Tsinghua University, the proposed Joint Lab will develop core technologies and IPs to bring up technical and business strength and competitiveness for Hong Kong, and PRD in the burgeoning DTV market in the Greater China Region. The strategic technology platform of Joint Lab will primarily focus on following technological aspects: 1. Product certification: Conformance specifications and certification methodologies, which are not yet available in the market, will be developed. 2. Spatial diversity: An innovated DTMB transmit diversity scheme will be developed. A system equipped with spatial diversity capability will then be designed and implemented. 3. BWM spectrum management and deployment strategy will also be developed by utilizing the strength and expertise built up in the DTMB development activities. The Joint Lab will play a critical role in promoting DTMB with significant impacts to Hong Kong and China DTV industry. The certification technologies can be employed to validate DTMB transmitter and terminal products, which are key elements to build up the industrial chain. Hong Kong Science and Technology Park have expressed strong interest to be a partner to facilitate the testing and certification services for DTMB terminal and chipset vendors. A number of equipment vendors, including Broadcast Technology Ltd. (Hong Kong), Tektronix and Freescale, have also demonstrated their specific interests in respective technologies to be developed in the Joint Lab.
