Transportation infrastructure plays a crucial role in fostering economic growth, job creation, mobility, trade and commerce, and tourism. It facilitates the movement of people, goods, and services, fostering new opportunities and improving regional connectivity. Therefore, conducting thorough infrastructure inspections is vital to (1) enhance safety, (2) identify maintenance issues, (3) ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations, and (4) validate the longevity of constructions. China has made substantial investments in transportation infrastructure, including expansive networks of highways, railways, tunnels, and subways. Consequently, there is a significant demand for infrastructure inspections. Traditionally, these inspections have relied on human labor, which is time-consuming and inefficient. Replacing manual inspections with automated systems becomes imperative. This transition will reduce dependence on human labor, enhance inspection efficiency, ensure the safety of frontline workers, and minimize human error, thereby increasing accuracy. An automated inspection system typically consists of a 2D/3D vision header, an inertial-aided module, and inspection software. In this project, the team aims to develop a high-scanning rate and high-precision 3D sensing technology specifically designed for transportation infrastructure inspection. Additionally, an AI-based defect detection software will be developed. The 3D sensing technology and software will be integrated with the previously developed inertial-aided module, resulting in a high-speed moving sensing system tailored for transportation infrastructure inspections.
