Non-terrestrial networks (NTN) can supplement terrestrial networks (TN) to provide coverage especially to rural and remote areas. Important use cases include ubiquitous connectivity and public safety, etc. Conventional satellite communications are separated with cellular communications, while all players in the industry are working on evolution to integrate the NTN and TN for the so-called Space-Air-Ground network for future, in which all mobile devices can be connected to both networks. However, this is a long evolution considering the diverse limitations of satellite and infrastructure industries around the world. In this project, we will develop 5G based terminals that can provide customized features to access satellites with different restrictions. New features will focus on handling satellite specific challenges, including implementation of real-time time and frequency pre-compensation based on satellite specific information, enhanced random access procedure and robust channel state information (CSI) feedback selection with large propagation delay. A complete test infrastructure will be developed for system verification. Simulation results will also be provided to evaluate system performance which shall satisfy the industrial requirements.
