Mr KK Kei-keung HUNG

5G mobile networks have been designed to address the emerging networking needs such as enhanced broadband support, ultra-low latency communications, and massive-scale Internet of Things systems. Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) are predominantly considering network densification by deploying numerous small cells. However, such a hyperdense network poses several deployment challenges, in turn, resulting in an increased total cost of ownership. This project will conduct a feasibility study in a new secure connected technology (sharing 5G network resource through blockchain) to help MNO/MVNO to share their network resources (such as computation, network bandwidth, … etc.) with other operators and reach more customers. The R&D team will conduct a proof of concept in developing a demo prototype of using blockchain technology in 5G network resource exchange, addressing the challenges in 5G core network resource sharing and support both permissioned and permissionless blockchain in the same application. All in all, 5G is considered as one of the most important components for future smart city, and this project investigates technologies to exchange 5G network resource. This will catalyze new applications, services, commercial activities as well as new R&D directions and innovations.
