5G Core (5GC) has been defined by 3GPP in such a way that it could easily be adopted to be cloud based. The service-based architecture (SBA) of the control plane functions allows one to split the network functions into different micro-services, deployed in virtualized containers with orchestration platform such as the Kubernetes. The cloud-based 5GC can thus be easily scaled and customised to fit different industry needs for efficiency and cost saving. Moreover, as the current commercial networks support only IP data traffic which do not meet the deterministic requirement for enterprises with Ethernet data traffic, this project aims to help to support both IP and Ethernet based data traffic with a cloud-based 5GC. ASTRI 5GC has been well recognised by over 10 partners in the 5GC development (with recognition in data plane development of 1Tbps leading market performance). With the enhancement to support not just cloud based, but also for Ethernet deterministic traffic, ASTRI could continue its leadership in being a pioneer in supporting such an infrastructure for commercial development. The project team has been engaged with current and new partners to collaborate to support use cases which relies on such an infrastructure.
