20 October 2025 – Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) welcomes HKSAR Government reappointed Ir Sunny Lee as ASTRI’s Board Chairman until 20 October 2026. The HKSAR Government also announced the appointment of three new members and re-appointment of four serving members to its Board of Directors for a two-year term commencing 21 October 2025.
The new appointees are:
The re-appointed serving Directors are Prof Christopher Chao Yu-hang, Mr Jack Ng Wun-kit, Professor Martin Wong Ding-fat and Mr Wilfred Wong Kam-pui. Besides, Professor Chan Chun-kwong, Mr Stephen Chau Kam-kun, and Mr Peter Ng Hon-yu have retired from the ASTRI’s Board of Directors after their terms expire.
Ir Sunny Lee, Board Chairman of ASTRI, gladly accepted the appointment. On behalf of the Board of Directors, he welcomes the new members while expresses gratitude to retiring members for their support and contributions to ASTRI and Hong Kong’s innovation and technology (I&T) development. He said: “The new members’ extensive industry background and professional expertise will bring fresh momentum to ASTRI. I look forward to working with all Board members to drive continuous innovation in the field of applied technology, contributing to the I&T blueprint of the nation and Hong Kong.”
The new Board of Directors will lead ASTRI and Nano and Advanced Materials Institute (NAMI) through the successful completion of their merger. Additionally, after internal selection, the Board of Directors of ASTRI and the Board of Directors of NAMI have decided to appoint Ir Dr Ted Suen as Chief Executive Officer after the merger of the two research and development (R&D) centres, effective 1 April 2026. Ir Dr Ted Suen has served as Chief Executive Officer of ASTRI since 2 July 2025.
In November last year, the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) announced plans to merge the two R&D centres. The merger will take effect on 1 April 2026. During the transitional period, Ir Dr Ted Suen will lead the two R&D centres to implement the integration plan and spearhead the development of the R&D centre after the merger. Ir Sunny Lee, Board Chairman of ASTRI, and Prof Cheng Shuk-han, Board Chairman of NAMI, said, “We have full confidence in Ir Dr Ted Suen. He has outstanding leadership and execution capabilities and will lead the new R&D centre to break new ground, elevate ASTRI’s research capabilities following the merger with NAMI, and help position Hong Kong as a global innovation hub.”
Ir Dr Ted Suen expressed great honour in receiving the appointment. He said, “ASTRI and NAMI are key research institutions under the Hong Kong SAR Government. This merger marks a significant step forward in advancing innovation and technology development in Hong Kong. With the support of ITC and the Board, I will lead the team to ensure a smooth transition. Post-merger, our combined strength will be even greater, generating complementary advantages and synergies that will accelerate the commercialisation of research outcomes, and contribute to the development of new quality productive forces for both the nation and Hong Kong.”
