Advanced Programmable Video Codec (H.264) Engine for Mobile Devices

Vision
Multimedia processing is an indispensable feature in daily life, especially in mobile applications. Users demand for higher quality media, higher processing capability and longer battery life. This imposed considerable design challenges on handheld product design. In particular, video processing on handheld devices is considered a killer-application for next-generation mobile applications.

H.264 video processing standard has been developed for next-generation media distribution and compression. This standard promises certain advantages over existing standards, which include drastic bandwidth saving and/or quality improvement. However, the algorithm of H.264 standard is processing-power-hungry, making it extremely complicated to be implemented on mobile platforms.

ASTRI is developing processing algorithms and implementation techniques to efficiently realize the advantages of H.264 standard on a single IC device, while maintaining low power consumption and small size. The resulting algorithms and implementation techniques will be suitable for next-generation mobile devices.

Methodology and Solutions
MTM's different divisions work closely together addressing this challenge, and each division is responsible for specific aspects:

  • Media Algorithm division - develops and optimizes various video algorithms

  • Processor Architecture division - designs and develops the low-power, programmable multi-core processor architecture

  • Hardware division - realizes the architecture by incorporating it into a low-power multi-core processor prototype

  • Software division - builds software and development suite to maximize the execution efficiency and programmability

  • System Platform division - extends the engines into reference designs

With high levels of flexibility, the solutions that ASTRI develops can be conveniently adapted to any consumer product design, and can be quickly and easily adopted in commercial multimedia products.

Applications
As the deliverables are reconfigurable for multimedia products, they can be employed as the processing units within multiple electronic products, from consumer-end web camera or media center, to premium-end Portable Media Player (PMP), Digital-TV Set-top box/Handhelds, and finally performance-end Smartphone and Communicators.
