微型相機模組已大量應用在具備手提攝影消費電子產品如手提電話, 筆記型電腦和其他電子產品。 據統計, 在2010年微型相機模組的銷售數量已逹至12億台。 對於這些微型相機模組, 市場一直要求有更多的功能。 光學變焦是其中一個主要用家要求的功能。 目前只有幾家公司能夠提供具光學變焦的微型相機模組, 但這些模組的體積相對仍然較大。 因應這個問題, 應科院在這個研發項目發展一個新型光學變焦微型相機模組, 其體積小於或等於20mm x 12.5 mm x 11.5mm, 並具備3倍光學變焦能力和5百萬像素。
