The project consists of two phases where the first phase of 9 months has a review milestone of 10% industry contribution as well as other industry supports. After successfully receiving the 10% industry contribution, the project will continue into the second phase of 8 months with the remaining budget and timing. The project deliverables are listed in the following. 本項目旨在開發WiMAX（全球微波接入互通作業系統）基站的平臺技術，以解決最初／最後一英里的無線接入和寬帶的無線移動。本項目準備完成以下目標：首先是開發具有競爭力的／獨特的平臺技術來提昇WiMAX基站的功能；其次是在本地建立對于提供快速解決方案、技術轉讓和客戶支持不可缺少的優秀專業知識和技術；第三是建立技術基礎和技術組合，以及和應科院的其他無線項目合作創造更多協同價值。 本項目的技術開發會分階段進行。我們會模擬物理層(PHY)的算法和系統，並且會對所提出的各種算法的性能進行仔細的分析，為所選擇的算法設計出於硬件上實現的結構。為了對物理層的硬件進行驗證，我們也會設計一個基本的媒体接入控制層(MAC)協議的架構。同時，商用的WiMAX芯片／參考設計可能會被用來提供對比和驗證，以減低風險。我們還會設計多項關鍵的交叉層算法和先進功能，以提昇產品的服務質量、移動性和覆蓋範圍。 連同其他終端設備和無線網絡網元管理系統方面的配套項目，本項目將會為香港、珠江三角洲和大中華區的工業界提供一套完整的技術組合和快速／全面的解決方案。由于它能夠提供領先的技術、核心的知識產權和實用的解決方案，本項目不但使本地工業受惠，而且能吸引外國公司來港，從而改變香港高科技的面貌。工業界更表示有意贊助本項目，它們的初期反應是令人鼓舞的。Altai Wireless已經與我們簽訂了價值約二十萬美元的意向書，並願意資助項目經費的百分之10。隨著WiMAX市場的逐漸成型，我們預計在本項目的研究過程中會有更多的贊助和各種形式的合作。
