This project is one of the projects in ASTRI's Next Generation Network (NGN) initiative. The objective is to develop an Open 5G Innovation Platform (5GIP) for the purposes of (1) Marketing and demonstration to the industry about ASTRI's 5G technologies for commercialization; (2) enabling end-to-end solutions by working with eco-system partners for integration and inter-operability testing of 5G applications in a real network environment; and (3) incubating and inspiring design innovations in Hong Kong, for example to push further while helping HK through the "Smart City Innovation Lab" in the HK Science Park. From Aug. 2014 to July 2016, the project team had completed the platform project "Open Broadband Wireless Innovation Platform (WIP)" (ART/182CP), which is the first phase of the proposed platform. The achievements include development of an end-to-end indoor/outdoor LTE network based on ASTRI and 3rd party’s technologies, and a number of application reference cases (e.g. smart home, smart street lights, video surveillance for public safety, and LTE/WiFi traffic offloading). In parallel, the project team had conducted a number of technology promotion and industry engagement for commercialization, for examples, we had showcased/promoted ASTRI's technologies @ e.g. MWC Barcelona, MWC Shanghai 2015/16, PT/EXPO China 2015, IUCF events; and signed MoU with 21Vianet to trial TD-LTE network technologies in Hong Kong. Examples of collaboration opportunities that WIP has helped with include Intel, Sunnada, Synchronous Communication, 深圳澤慧通, TCL, and Hong Kong Police Force (i.e. LTE private trial network); The WIP project has also strengthened ASTRI’s cross-team, cross-projects collaboration for creating bigger impact solutions. 5G (5th generation mobile network) is the evolution of the 4G/LTE technologies in terms of capacity, and performance, as well as a revolution of native flexibility and programmability conversion in Radio Access Network (RAN), Core Networks, Mobile Edge Networks, and Edge IoT Networks. With the proposed Open 5G Innovation Platform, which is an enabling project to develop a 5G trial platform through integration of ASTRI and 3rd party’s technologies and products, we can • continue the marketing and demonstration to the industry about ASTRI’s 4G/5G technologies for commercialization; • trial of emerging 5G technologies (C-RAN, NFV, and MEC), validating designs and vendor inter-operability testing in a real network environment • enable end-to-end solutions by working with eco-system partners for integration and inter-operability testing of 5G applications in a real network environment; and • incubate and inspire design innovations in Hong Kong, for example to push further while helping HK through the Smart City Innovation Center in the Hong Kong Science Park. This proposed Open 5G Innovation Platform is a continuation of the Wireless Innovation Platform (WIP) in the project ART/182CP and in line with the 5G technology trend. It is a general view in industry and 3GPP standards that 5G is a combination of continuous evolution in LTE/LTE-Advanced (eLTE), and newly introduced RAT (New RAT). This concept achieves improved performance such as dramatic leaps in bit rate and capacity by New RAT applicable to broader frequency bands while providing a basic coverage area and basic services such as mission critical communication by eLTE. The 5GIP will be based on the Wireless Innovation Platform (WIP) developed in ART/182CP project, and focus on the development of network software-configurability, network integration of ASTRI and 3rd party’s technologies and products, and development of network orchestrator and network slicing features. 5GIP will be an integral part of commercializing technologies and applications in ASTRI's Next Generation Network Initiative. ASTRI has developed LTE/4G technologies, and been recognized as one of the technologies leaders in this industry. ASTRI strives to research, develop and commercialize leading-edge 5G technologies for providing innovative and value-added applications and services. This project will provide an advanced 5G network environment to support ASTRI and local community collaboration for developing innovative products and competitive products. In addition, this platform will help to advance the technical capability and competiveness of the communications industry in Hong Kong and the region.
