[BARCELONA, Spain, 27 February 2023] The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI), together with ecosystem partners Anktion (Fujian) Technology Co., Ltd (“Anktion”), Astella Technologies Limited (“Astella”), n-hop technologies Limited (“n-hop technologies”), and Peng Cheng Laboratory (“PCL”), showcase the latest 5G applications and innovations with the theme “Intelligent 5G, Beyond Connectivity” at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2023 from 27 February to 2 March.
These technologies include:
- 5G-IAB (Integrated Access and Backhaul) enabled by Network Coding
- 5G Millimeter-Wave Integrated Small Cell (ISC)
- 5G-enabled TSN Solution for Industrial Internet
- 5G orchestrator for ASTRI Easy 5G network deployment as Intel Gold-level Network Builders Partners
During the event, ASTRI and ecosystems partners showcase various cost-effective, cutting-edge 5G technologies, enabling corporates to enter the market quickly for rolling out 5G for public, private or vertical market applications using Easy 5G. Our “5G + Industrial Internet” supports use cases such as smart factories, power grids, mining, smart transportation, which will enable factories in realising Industry 4.0 transformation towards fully 5G connected factories. We are actively engaging with different local and global partners to commercialise and apply 5G network solutions currently.

5G-IAB Enabled by Network Coding: ASTRI, together with Anktion and n-hop technologies jointly showcase the world first Network Coding enabled 5G IAB network. This ground-breaking technology, invented by n-hop deployed in the form of BATched Sparse (BATS) code greatly enhances the capability of densely connected 5G base stations, without the need of fibre cabling whilst maximizes information flow through the network. Along with Anktion’s base stations, the advance BATS solution showcases the sharing of wireless spectrum for backhauling and user equipment connectivity, unlocking potential of rapid cell site deployment and efficient use of spectrum.
5G mmWave integrated small cell (ISC): ASTRI collaborates with Astella to develop a commercial grade 5G mmWave ISC solution. The 5G mmWave operates at 28GHz carrier frequency, 400 MHz system bandwidth, 2 transmit and 2 receive antennas, providing the very high-speed and low latency traffics. The 5G mmWave ISC has been certified in operator networks. This solution is highly useful in both public networks and private networks, especially when the licensed sub-6 spectrum resources are limited, and data traffics could be easily offloaded in the mmWave frequency band.
5G-enabled TSN: ASTRI’s 5G TSN supports new industrialization and digital transformation for Industrial Internet. The TSN-enabled 5G system, perceived as an IEEE-compliant virtual Ethernet TSN bridge, extends TSN capabilities over the wireless domain for time-critical services. ASTRI collaborates with Anktion and Peng Cheng Laboratory, a national research centre located in Shenzhen China, to develop and showcase the 5G end-to-end TSN-enabled system. ASTRI’s solution delivers a deterministic network for “5G + Industrial Internet”, supporting use cases such as smart factories, power grids, mining, smart transportation, which will enable factories in realizing Industry 4.0 transformation towards fully 5G connected factories.
Easy 5G network deployment – 5G orchestrator: The 5G orchestrator can support both public and private cloud, also available as microsites at the Intel Smart Edge Portal. As an Intel Gold-level Network Builders Partner, ASTRI will join hands with Intel to promote virtualized 5G technologies, which will allow corporates to deploy 5G for public, private or vertical market applications and enter the market quickly via 5G orchestration. The 5G User Plane Function (UPF) not just delivers high data processing performance (over 1.3Tbps throughput collaborating with Intel), but also supports 5G-LAN, precise time synchronization (with Intel I225/I226 series) and ultra-low jitter with high availability.
