Explosion-preventing
Li-battery technology

The increasing use of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIB), especially in common electronic products such as USBs, power banks, cameras, smartphones and laptops, even cars and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), have raised safety concerns.

Most notable of these concerns are the risks of LIB catching fire - or worse, exploding. As an answer, ASTRI has developed a highly permeable, high-porosity self-shutdown layer (SSL) in the LIB. This interrupts cell reaction when batteries are subjected to adverse temperatures, such as during charging, that causes them to be volatile and heat up to dangerous levels.

The SSL works to inhibit the chain reaction in the batteries, reduce the degeneration of the separator, control overheating of cells and thus, eliminate opportunities for ignition and explosion. It also improves charging and discharging speeds. An added bonus is the technology is environmentally friendly and involves low process cost, allowing scalable industrial fabrication.

ASTRI’s tech team has also developed advanced aqueous-based batteries for autonomous vehicles, drones and robots. Like its Li-Ion batteries technology, these are environmentally-friendly, and include explosion-prevention features and high-charging efficiency.

All these allow for greater security and peace of mind in the continued application in electric and electronic appliances and further drive technology and innovation forward.
