OptiSurface: Zero-dead-corner Optimized Path Planning for Surface Inspection

This is a software plugin for automated inspection system. The goal is to provide a reliable and complete inspection performance. Surface inspection is necessary in manufacturing and maintenance because it is related to quality control and even safety of a product. Existing automated systems suffer from the problem of missing some portion of the surface, resulting in an incomplete inspection and unreliable result. The cause of this problem is that the imaging sensor can only cover a portion of an inspected object from a particular viewpoint, and the object may have free shape and different optical properties of the surface. We solve this problem by defining an “effective region” corresponding to the surface portion that is truly inspected by the sensor from that particular viewpoint. This effective region is predicted by using a deep neural network, being trained from examples of different surface types. Based on the predicted effective regions, the system can identify a minimum set of viewpoints that can truly cover the whole object, and provide a reliable, optimized path for the automated inspection system.
