Self-organising and Coordinated LTE Small Cells

  • The project develops LTE self-organising networks (SON) and interference coordination technologies for LTE small cells in order to address the demand on deploying small cells in 4G networks. A LTE heterogeneous network in which the macro cells coverage area overlays with small cells, provides an efficient way to offload data traffic from macro cells to small cells to improve system capacity. The technologies enhance our current LTE small cell baseband core technologies in managing inter-cell interference with intelligent multi-cells coordination, self-configuration and optimisation.

    The project deliverables include:

    (1) enhanced baseband core and protocol stack technologies for SON and interference coordination; and

    (2) LTE SON small cell reference design including L1 link level and system level simulation platforms, enhanced baseband (L1) and SON-enabled protocol stack modules, Radio Resource Management (RRM) and Medium Access Control (MAC) in L2/L3 supporting SON and interference coordination, and a complete test infrastructure.
