ASTRI demonstrates intelligent display R&D at CES Asia 2018

  • From 13 to 15 June 2018, ASTRI participated in CES Asia – one of the largest events of the Asia-Pacific electronics industry – with its latest innovations in intelligent display technologies. Spearheaded by the Optoelectronics Technology Division, the ASTRI team showcased the most recent and exciting developments in its intelligent display R&D at the event which attracted over 40,000 visitors as well as more 500 than exhibiting institutions. Taking place at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC), the event was a grand showcase of the latest and most advanced solutions ranging from Smart Cities, Artificial Intelligence, Smart Vehicles to Robotics.

    ASTRI’s innovations were on display at its booth N3-3033 at the event. The team, led by Mr Kenny Chan, Senior Manager, demonstrated a number of cutting-edge display technologies with sensing solutions relevant for Smart City applications, such as Laser Holographic Projection module and Head-up Display (HUD), In addition, ASTRI’s Head-mount Display (HMD) solution for Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) applications, as well as its award-winning Palm Sensing Biometric Authentication system were also showcased.

    CES Asia is the premier event for the consumer electronics industry in this region. The event brings together innovators from across several vertical industries in the Asian marketplace while providing leading Asian and global brands as well as startups a platform to create partnerships, build relationships and reinforce their brands. Industry executives, global buyers, Government officials, market analysts, retailers, media and a large number of other visitors witness the latest products and technologies at this annual event.

  • ASTRI’s Intelligent Projection Team showcased its latest R&D innovation at the LASER World event of PHOTONICS CHINA 2018. One of the most vibrant laser and photonics expos in Asia, PHOTONICS CHINA was Organised by Messe Muenchen Shanghai Co., Ltd. The event took place at Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC) from 14-16 March 2018.

    Mr Kenny Chan, Senior Manager, led ASTRI’s participation in the event at Booth W2-2735. ASTRI is demonstrating a number of cutting-edge projection technologies – involving LCoS phase modulator device – for advanced displays such as head-up display (HUD) and head-mount display (HMD) optical systems.

    By closely collaborating with leading businesses, experts and researchers in intelligent display and projection from around the world, ASTRI strives to promote continued development and innovation in this sector.

  • ASTRI’s Machine Vision R&D Team is showcasing its latest R&D innovation at the Vision China (Shanghai) 2018 Exhibition – one of the largest and most influential Machine Vision shows in Asia. Organised by the China Society of Image and Graphics (CSIG) and Messe Muenchen International (MMI), the exhibition takes place at Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC) from 14-16 March 2018.

    The ASTRI team taking part in the event was delighted to receive Mr Denis Tse Tik-yang, Board Director of ASTRI, as a visitor to their booth. Mr Tse expressed his support to ASTRI’s innovative R&D endeavours and gave the team a big cheer for their efforts.

    ASTRI showcases next generation identity management technologies with its Palm Fusion Biometric solution

  • ASTRI, powered by technology, strives to enrich people’s lives by innovating solutions that help businesses and communities. Showcasing one of its latest and novel solutions, developed jointly with its Sweden-based partner Smart Secure ID (SSID), ASTRI is participating in the Hong Kong Science Park Innovation Showcase 2017-18. The solution showcased by ASTRI – ‘Palm Fusion Biometric sensing device’ – is a biometric authentication method based on the unique patterns and various characteristics in the palms of people’s hands. The solution uses a state-of-the-art contact-less, biometric sensing and verification device developed by ASTRI. This solution works by capturing a person’s palm vein and palm print patterns at the same time while sensing the presence of a palm placed on the device through infrared and visible light.

    Since veins lie beneath the skin, attempts to forge an identity becomes extremely difficult. Furthermore, palm print contains a wealth of inimitable features – even identical twins can be differentiated through their palm print patterns. By using the fusion technology, ASTRI’s solution obtains a higher security level, combining both palm print and palm vein features.

    Identity management is a key issue across many different sectors as organisations as well as citizens strive to safeguard their information and digital assets. This innovative solution from ASTRI brings huge practical benefits through its robust access control mechanism.

    Model-Based Design of Automator

  • In the era of Industry 4.0, next generation embedded systems will be more intelligent – deeply integrating the information and physical worlds. These embedded systems, referred to as Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) by scientists in Europe, will be deployed in the domains of automotive, aerospace, health and energy as well as smart city. Enabled by Model-based Design (MBD), the next generation of embedded systems will emerge, leading to significant cost-saving and improved productivity in the ICT sector.

    System-Level Virtual Prototyping of Embedded Systems

  • Performance-critical embedded systems consist of hardware, software and physical systems. In order to meet the sophisticated design requirements of these systems, ASTRI has developed innovative co-modelling technologies for systems-level virtual prototypes. The system architecture is based on the SAE AS5506B standard (Architecture Analysis and Design Language, AADL) and the AADL Behaviour Annex (INRIA Polychrony). Different types of simulation could be carried out at the system level, including Model-In-The-Loop (MIL) simulation, Software-In-The-Loop (SIL) simulation, and Hardware-In-The-Loop (HIL) simulation. System-level virtual prototyping involving an integrated simulation enables performance prediction of the system prior to constructing physical prototypes.

    Optical Sensing & Metrology

  • The natural user interface sensing platform focuses on information extraction from human eyes and hands.

    Based on the captured eye image sequence, eye related information such as user’s eye gazing direction, iris information, blinking frequency can be obtained. By applying the extracted eye information into the HUD platform, we can make warning if we detect the user is not in a proper driving condition, e.g. in a drowsing or distracted condition. By applying the extracted eye information into the HMD platform, we can determine user identity for login or online payment. By analysing user gazing direction, we can also determine user intension and concentration level for applications such as gaming or education.

    Based on the sensed hand and finger image sequence, user gesture, pose and pointing direction can be determined. By applying the extracted hand or finger information into the HUD platform, driver is able to take control on the HUD by simple gestures such as flipping right/left. By applying the hand information into the HMD platform, it is easy for user to input into the user control interface and make interaction with displayed virtual object.

     

    To capture the eye image and finger image efficiency, a dedicated hardware processing platform is integrated to control the synchronization between external light source and camera sensor. The hardware processor platform processes the incoming camera data and then performs the real-time analysis for the eye and finger information. With the benefit of all-in-one system, the related information can be displayed on the HUD or HMD system more conveniently and effectively.

    AR Head Mounted Display

  • ASTRI’s AR (Augmented Reality) Head Mount Display uses proprietary sensing integrated optics module for both display and sensing. The intelligent projection solutions cover see through, non-see through virtual display with different types of field of view (FOV), including small FOV prism type and large FOV combiner type. With its sensing capability, it is able to realise finger touch sensing on air, pupil detection and tracking and iris recognition. As there is a built-in android embedded system, it is user friendly to connect to any Internet of Things (IoT) system such as In-door navigation for different types of AR applications.

  • To meet the requirements of high brightness and compact size, for applications of Automotive Head-up-display and large screen displays on wall, especially in outdoor environment, breakthrough in the development of laser based projection display, including increased optical system efficiency and reduced size/weight and cost is much desired.

    In laser based projection display, including conventional imaging/projection and scanned-beam display technologies, additional restrictive requirements must be fulfilled for commercialisation and market acceptance:

    • High resolution
    • High brightness
    • Low speckle
    • Eye safe
    • Large depth of focus and wide projection angle

    ASTRI focuses on developing 2D laser holographic projection display optics engine design and its computer generated hologram (CGH) algorithm, which are expected to have unique ability to achieve key requirements outlined above.
