ASTRI announced the formation of the Exploratory Research Laboratory (ERL), a new key technology initiative in addition to the five core areas of ASTRI’s R&D focuses.

The mission of the ERL is to perform exploratory research for emerging and interdisciplinary technologies with good business potentials. The ERL has already started a couple of seed projects related to software and Internet technologies for cloud computing, data analytics and information security.

There are five researchers in the ERL with Dr Lo Tak-sing as team leader. While the ERL will focus on technology areas outside the missions of ASTRI’s existing R&D groups, it welcomes and seeks synergetic collaborations with other research groups, R&D centers, universities and businesses.

[Hong Kong, 28 September 2011]  The Board of the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute Company Limited (“ASTRI”) today (28 September) announced the decision to disband its subsidiary, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Institute of Chinese Medicine Limited (“HKJCICM”). The decision has been made in concurrence with that of Hong Kong Jockey Club (Charities) Limited (“HKJCCL”). ASTRI and HKJCCL each hold 50% of the shares of HKJCICM.

The resolution was reached by the ASTRI Board after an in-depth review of the role of the HKJCICM in Hong Kong against the rapidly changing environment in Chinese medicine and taking into consideration of the new strategy put forward by the Hong Kong SAR Government on promoting Chinese medicine through a Government-led committee.

The ASTRI Board has also concluded that since the current focus of ASTRI is on Information and Communications Technologies, ASTRI should concentrate its energy and resources on this core business instead of Chinese medicine.

Dr Patrick Wang Shui-chung, Chairman of the ASTRI Board, said, “On behalf of ASTRI, I wish to thank all past and present Board members and staff of HKJCICM for all their contributions in promoting Chinese medicine in the past years.”

The HKJCICM was set up under the Companies Ordinance in May 2001.

[Hong Kong, 26 October 2010] Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute Company Limited (ASTRI) has announced the latest composition of its Board of Directors, which includes three new appointees. They are Prof. Andrew Chan Chi-fai, Mr George Hongchoy Kwok-lung, and Ms Agnes Nardi Kar-wai. Together with other re-appointed Directors, they will be serving on a two-year term from 21 October 2010 to 20 October 2012.

Prof. Chan is the Professor of the Department of Marketing and the Director of Executive MBA Program and BBA-JD Program of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is the Chairman of the Hong Kong Deposit Protection Board and a Member of the Council of Hong Kong Institute of Education.

Mr Hongchoy is the Chief Executive Officer of the Link Management Limited. He is a Member (Rep.) of the Advisory Committee on Human Resources Development in the Financial Services Sector, and a Member of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited.

Ms Nardi is the Managing Director of Ancube Consulting Limited. She was previously a Member of the Hong Kong Logistics Development Council.

Dr Patrick Wang Shui-chung, Chairman of ASTRI’s Board of Directors, welcomed the three new members to the Board. He said, “We are delighted that these three accomplished individuals have joined ASTRI’s Board of Directors. No doubt, these appointments will further strengthen the relationship between ASTRI, the industry and academia and enhance its efforts in the commercialization of technologies developed by ASTRI.”

Retiring from ASTRI’s Board of Directors are Dr Jacqueline Lui Chiu-tong, Prof. Vincent Y. Shen, and Mr Ben Wong Chung-mat.

Dr Wang thanked the departing members for their tremendous contributions while serving on the board.

Hong Kong Jockey Club Institute of Chinese Medicine (HKJCICM) announced that it has appointed Prof. Sarah Hui Siu Chun as the new Executive Director of the company. Prof. Hui received her bachelor degree in Pharmacology with first class honour and PhD in Neuropharmacology from the Bradford University in England.

Prof. Hui has begun her career in Chinese medicine since 1991 and was considered a pioneer in advocating and developing tertiary education of Chinese medicine in Hong Kong. She was the Deputy Director of the School of Chinese Medicine, the University of Hong Kong and was the founder and President of the Hong Kong Academy of Chinese Medicine. Prior to joining HKJCICM, Prof. Hui was member of the company’s Board of Directors from 2005 to 2009. She was also appointed by the HKSAR Government to serve in various councils and committees including Subcommittee on TCM Practitioners of the Preparatory Committee on Chinese Medicine, Preparatory Committee on Chinese Medicine, Chinese Medicine Council, Air Pollution & Waste Disposal Appeal Board (Environment & Food Bureau), Taskforce on Employees’ Compensation Ordinance in relation to the Recognition of Medical Treatment, and Examination and Certification Given by Registered Chinese Medicine Practitioner (Labour Department). She is also Advisor of Chinese Medicine Development of the Hong Kong Hospital Authority.

Prof. Hui has assumed office with effect from 11 January 2010. With sophisticated professional background and sound experience in the Chinese Medicine industry, Prof. Hui will lead the team at HKJCICM towards a new phase of development. HKJCICM is a subsidiary of ASTRI, it was set up by the HKSAR Government in 2001 as the local focal point for action and coordination to steer Chinese medicine development.

[Hong Kong, October 21, 2008] Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute Company Limited (ASTRI) today announced five new appointees to its Board of Directors.

The new appointees are Mr. Anthony Au Wai-hung, Prof. Philip Chan Ching-ho, Prof. Chew Weng-cho, Mr. Victor Ng Kwok-ho and Mr. Luther Wong Lok-tak.

Mr. Au is the Managing Director of Futuresuccess Consultants Ltd. He was a member of the ITF (SERAP Project Assessment Panel), a representative/member of the Small and Medium Enterprises Committee, and a member of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Fund Vetting Committee.

Prof. Chan is the Dean of Engineering and a Chair Professor of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He is serving as a member of ASTRI’s Technology Review Panel and the Domain Advisory Committees of the IC Design Group and the Material Packaging Technology Group.

Prof. Chew is the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Chair of Electromagnetics of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of the University of Hong Kong.

Mr. Ng is the founder and Managing Director of Micom Tech Ltd. Mr Ng is a member of ASTRI’s Technology Review Panel and the Domain Advisory Committees of the Enterprise and Consumer Electronics Group and the IC Design Group. Mr Ng is also a member of ITC’s DesignSmart Initiative Assessment Panel and ITF (SERAP Project Assessment Panel).

Mr. Wong is the Managing Director of C&G Environmental Technology Ltd. He is now one of the Vice-Presidents of Hong Kong Small and Medium Enterprises General Association. He is also a member of ITF (SERAP Project Assessment Panel), a General Committee Member of the Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong and the Chairman of its Environmental Technology Sub-committee.

“We are happy to welcome these five accomplished individuals to ASTRI’s Board of Directors,” said Dr. Patrick Wang Shui-chung, Chairman of ASTRI’s Board of Directors.

“These appointments will strengthen the relationship between ASTRI, the industry and academia, and help enhance the development of ASTRI’s roadmap for its R&D efforts related to Information and Communications Technologies,” Dr. Wang added.
