This project focuses on developing a new platform technology--near-field antenna sub-assemblies. The target application is medical imaging, in particular enabling spectrographic MRI (MRSI) and enhancing SNR in existing MRI machines. The project will focus on two areas: phased antenna coil arrays and tunable antenna sub-assemblies. The phased antenna coil arrays use traditional phased antenna array techniques to increase the image resolution in low tesla MRI machines. Tunable antenna coil sub-assemblies target different atomic element resonant frequencies, allowing MRI machines to be used for molecular disease imaging and different chemical element imaging. The platform technologies developed will have immediate application within the medical industry, allowing MRI machines to increase resolution, faster imaging times, and increase their functionality. The new platform technology will enable the Antenna and RF group to work together both with industry and cross-domain within ASTRI.
