1a) Design and prototype construction of Copper RF receiver coil for infants (i.e. 1.5T 8-channel baby head coil) 1b) Design and prototype construction of HTS coil (i.e. 0.5T 4-channel HTS head coil) 1c) Design of a safe and reliable cryostat for cooling the HTS coil with maximum patient safety 1d) Design of the integrated controlling and monitoring system (Note: Item 1(a-d) correspond to item 1 of the original deliverable. Design and prototype construction will be completed for the copper RF receiver coil and HTS coil. Only design work will be completed for the cryostat and the integrated controlling and monitoring system.)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is the best non-invasive medical imaging modalities to help us understanding the brain development of babies and for early detection of brain diseases in premature babies. MRI Incubator (MRII) is a useful add-on to MRI by providing a safe and regulated environment for babies during MRI scan. The objectives of this project is to design an MRII with the following innovating features: 1) A integrated controlling and vital signs monitoring system; 2) Custom designed copper RF receiver coil for improving the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and ultimately achieving faster scanning or better image quality; (3) High Temperature Superconductor(HTS) coil for improving the SNR in low-field MRI enabling infant MRI to be performed at a fraction of current cost; (4) A safe and reliable cryostat for cooling the HTS coil with maximum patient safety. We will also construct the prototype for both copper and HTS receiver coil custom design for infants.
