LTE Femtocell (HeNB) is a small base station that is typically provided by the mobile operator and deployed in home or local hot spot in order to achieve better indoor wireless coverage. LTE Femto Access Subsystem is deployed by mobile operators to allow a large number of HeNBs to connect to its mobile network. The key requirements of LTE Femto Access Subsystem include: i) Ensure security over third party back-hauls such as DSL/cable/fiber ii) Perform traffic aggregation iii) Provide centralized management of a large number of HeNBs (0.5-1Million) supporting automatic HeNB configuration and other features such as LTE femtocell Self Organized Network (SON). This project will develop a 3GPP standard compliant and commercial-grade LTE Femto Access Subsystem which consists of three entities: i) Security gateway to provide secured connections over 3rd party’s networks ii) HeNB GW to aggregate signal and data traffic iii) Femto management system (HeMS) to provide automatic configuration and management of HeNBs. This project will focus on: i) Advanced IPSec processing algorithm to support >10Gbps data throughput ii) Efficient software architecture and policy algorithms to support LTE SON iii) Management software capable to support more than 500K HeNBs in order to meet operator’s needs. The local/regional wireless industry is mainly focused on Original Equipment Manufacturing/Original Design Manufacturing (OEM/ODM) business. The LTE Femto Access Subsystem can strengthen their product competitiveness and enable them to enter the huge LTE market with an end-to-end network solution. Several leading industry players have shown their interests in licensing the technologies with upfront cash contributions, and further commercialization in the near future.
