In this project, ASTRI proposes to develop four platform technologies which comprise 1) chip electrode design for LEDs, 2) high brightness and low energy consumption LED driving module, 3) high failure tolerant circuit design for LED light source, and 4) remote and feedback control technology. By integrating these platform technologies, ASTRI will provide solutions for using LEDs in general lighting applications. Compared with traditional light sources, LEDs should be a promising next generation light source for the lighting industries. It has several unique superior characteristics such as light weight, small and slim form factor, safety, low environmental impact, and color tunable by digital controlling systems. However, cost and efficiency are still barriers and need to be overcome for LEDs to penetrate the lighting market. The objectives of the project consist of the following major components, consisting of five major deliverables. • Developing the platform technology for designing electrodes to allow for uniform current distribution on light emitting devices. • Developing the platform technology of low energy consumption and high brightness for the LED driving module. • Developing the platform technology of high defect/failure tolerant LED light source. • Developing the platform technology for smart lighting. • Delivering four representative product prototypes in general lighting application, which include wall wash light, MR16 lamp, down ceiling lamp, smart light module and smart MR16 lamp. In order to achieve these targets, we will integrate technologies from other ASTRI teams including heat dissipation solutions, design of system-in-package, etc. ASTRI aims to provide complete technical solutions and add values for using LEDs in general lighting as a energy saving and green light source. Moreover, ASTRI has sought for endorsement from local industrial partners and universities. This helps ASTRI realize a high quality product prototype with performance and cost advantages to penetrate the market, promote the technology transfer to industry, and enhance the collaboration between industry and universities in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta area.
