LCD Display Enhancement Controller (LDEC) is a joint project proposed by IC Design (ICD) and Material and Packaging Technologies (MPT) Groups. It aims to reduce motion blur effects on LCD TV and to realize ASTRI original algorithms on silicon for commercial adoption. Main causes of LCD TV motion blur are – slow Liquid Crystal response time and long display hold time. Motion blur from display hold-type effect is perceptual. The longer and brighter a picture is displayed, the slower its after-image is removed. This project focuses on reducing the hold time of each displayed image by inserting interpolated frames. Added to that, this ASTRI Frame Rate Conversion (AFRC) is augmented with ASTRI’s own dynamic backlight scanning control. A seed project HOMI (ARD-054) was completed by the same team in ASTRI to establish a foundation in Motion Estimation/Motion Compensation based FRC, Algorithm steps and techniques for pre-processing, scene analysis, block-matching Motion Estimation and Compensation and artifact removal were developed. Visual quality improvement over original video streams was demonstrated on a 120 Hz LCD TV. Reputable foreign TV manufacturers have introduced new lines of LCD TVs to address the motion blur issue. Successful implementation of this project could advance the competitiveness of Chinese LCD TV manufacturers in this particular feature.
