It is proven that interactive devices can help promote e-learning. The Hong Kong Education Bureau has also initiated a Pilot Scheme on e-Learning in schools to enhance students’ information literacy and learning effectiveness. However, the vast initial investment for installation is still a major barrier for local schools to adopt the technology. In this project, different R&D methodologies will be involved including optical multi-touch sensing technology for pointing and gesture recognition; image processing technique for teacher tracking and far field gesture remote control to be applied in E-Board. To realize the E-Desk, 3D optical touch sensing technology, near distance 3D non-touch recognition and object recognition methods will be developed in this project. It is possible to enhance the interaction between E-Board and E-Desk. A comprehensive interactive platform will allow the contents between different devices to be shared effectively. In an E-Classroom, it is possible to provide a totally new experience to both teachers and students. The low cost total solution proposed in this project will definitely help promote e-Learning in Hong Kong and Mainland China.
