Due to an increasing aging population in the world, there is a substantial number of people with chronic diseases who need homecare and long-term care services. In Hong Kong, by 2025, more than 20% of the population is aged over 65 and more than 70% of them have chronic diseases such as high blood pressure. The healthcare cost keeps increasing and accounts for approximately 10% of the GDP in Hong Kong. To make matter worse, there has been a shortage in service providers and nurses. Hence, healthcare services are being extended from hospital to home and the traditional care process is being evaluated. Through combining Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and light-weight wearable measurement device, patients can be discharged at an earlier stage and monitored remotely at home or care centers. Cardio-vascular diseases are what the public concerns most and continual blood pressure measurement especially measurement during sleep is crucial in identifying potential risk of stroke. Use of cuffless blood pressure devices available in market require the assistance of medical staff and frequent calibration which affect the prevalent use of the device. In this project, we aim at developing a wearable cardiovascular monitoring device which can be easily used by users to measure heart rate, pulse oximetry, arterial stiffness index and blood pressure continually. The measurement results can be uploaded easily to a central database through existing tele-care systems available in Hong Kong or mobile devices.
