With escalating expectations on portable devices, more functional features are on their way of implementation to enrich user experience. The next evolution on display is to move from 2D to 3D while people is also expecting to realize direct access control on the projected image instead of using such traditional input devices as keyboard and mouse. Thus, 3D and interactive capabilities are most likely to be regarded as basic functions embedded in the next generation mobile devices. ASTRI aims at developing dual mode 3D pico-projector and mobile interactive I/O devices by integrating unique single hybrid optics projection engine, proprietary synchronized time sequential (STS) control methodologies, and advanced detection / recognition technologies for next generation dual mode “3D Pico Projector and Mobile Interactive Device”. By fully utilizing the unique merit of LCoS polarized projection, ASTRI’s solutions are able to shoot for best system efficacy together with most compact form factor to fulfill "UNMET" market demands on such devices. The deliverables of the project consist of two main categories: (1). Dual mode 3D pico-projectors system A worldwide first very compact, dual mode 3D pico-projector system will be developed, which is able to support both shutter mode and polarization mode. With its ultra portability, its usage would be broadened to cover 3D portable entertainment as well as gaming market. The applications could be standalone 3D pico projector, docking stations for next generation handheld devices such as 3D iphone, 3D NDS, or directly embedded into handheld devices in the long run. (2). Mobile interactive input/output devices The novel mobile interactive input & output device is capable of supporting two screens projections with different display content and the sub screen is able to act as virtual input device providing gesture, handwriting and image capturing functions. Not only it can enhance PC, Notebook/Netbook’s user interface by replacing the traditional input devices such as keyboard, mouse and writing pad, but also it is highly possible to replace such devices completely.
