Innovative Technology Series (Workshop 7)

Workshop 7: A half-day workshop in workshop in Communications Technologies

Topic 1: 5G Trends

The Fifth generation of mobile technology (5G) is positioned to address the demands of 2020 and beyond. It is projected that 5G will enable diverse use cases including seamless wide-area coverage, high-capacity hot-spot, low power massive connections, and low latency high reliability communications. In this talk, we will present ASTRI’s Next Generation Network (NGN) initiative to support these 5G visions. In particular, we will introduce some key technologies research and industry collaborations in the initiative, such as Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV), Opportunistic Access to available Spectrum, Machine-type communications (MTC), Device-to-Device (D2D) communications and Vehicle based networking. We will introduce a 4G/5G test bed in ASTRI under the Wireless Innovation Platform (WIP) to drive sustained and disruptive technologies and new applications. Finally, we will present some recent status in ASTRI’s 5G research and standardization activities.

Topic 2: In-Car Gateway Software for Internet-of-Vehicles (IoV)

In this talk, recent Internet-of-Vehicles (IoV) development and trend, and related enabling technologies will be discussed. ASTRI’s InCar gateway software will be introduced for enabling IoV system and application development, by providing real-time car status monitoring, ECUs information and data sharing, network and Internet connectivity. Also, ASTRI’s Internet-of-Things (IoT) management and application platform (IMAP) for large-scale device and data management will be covered in this talk. By integrating In-Car gateway software with IMAP, several IoV systems and applications (like navigation, telematics, car status monitoring, early failure detection, road emergency and assistance, and remote diagnostics, etc.) can be enabled as well.

Topic 3: Next Generation Radio Access Network using TV White Space and License-Assisted Access to Unlicensed Spectrum

Next generation radio access network will employ new spectrum utilization paradigms in order to extend traffic capacity and enable transmission bandwidths needed to support very high data rates. In this talk, we will present ASTRI’s R&D efforts in TV white space (TVWS) technology and licensed-assisted access (LAA) to unlicensed spectrum. First, TVWS is unused television broadcast spectrum resource that can be exploited through spectrum sharing. ASTRI is currently investigating the technical feasibility of TVWS technology in Hong Kong, and has developed LTE-based TVWS infrastructure equipment. Second, the 3GPP is standardizing LTE LAA, which is the operation to aggregate a primary cell, using licensed spectrum, to deliver critical information and guaranteed Quality of Service, and a co-located secondary cell, using unlicensed spectrum, to opportunistically boost data rate. ASTRI is currently developing forward looking LTE LAA algorithms for inter-radio access technology interference mitigation and dynamic spectrum access.

Topic 4: LTE-A and Beyond : 5G, Testing and Measurement Challenges for the evolving Wireless Communication Market

The LTE deployment so far has deployed for almost 400 networks. Most of the features of 3GPP Release 8-11 has been commercial reality. Release 12 has been introduced which includes M2M, Small Cell Enhancements and Device to Device. The outlook of Release 13 will also be covered in this presentation. Combinations of Release 12 and 13 features will be an important step to 5G. Different aspects for 5G testing (new air interface, Massive MIMO, mm wave) will be described as well.

About  ITS Workshop

Jointly organized by the Department of Electronic and Information Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU EIE), Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI), and Hong Kong Science and Technology Park (HKSTP), the Innovative Technology Series (ITS) seeks to keep the industry and the community abreast of the current and emerging technologies in electronic and information engineering. The ITS will be delivered in a series of 12 structural professional training workshops covering different topics of current and upcoming technologies as well as the latest research results. Presenters of the training workshops will be the professors of PolyU EIE and research project leaders of ASTRI. Overseas experts may also join the training workshops to share their experience with local industry and community.
