Irlovan Wang Cong, Senior Lead Engineer, IOTSAI
Irlovan Wang was born in Jiangsu, Mainland. Since 2016, he came to Hong Kong to study in Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) and attained the MSc degree. His career is focused on the Industrial 4.0, automation and computer vision technology. Irlovan is interested in exploiting new technologies to achieve cost saving and operations efficiency in applied science.
Apart from work, he likes hiking and out-door activities. He chooses to live in Hong Kong as his second hometown because there are lots of hiking trials that he can get in touch with the nature.
Q. How did you join ASTRI?
During my working and study in Hong Kong, I realised that new technology is important to increase the city’s competitiveness and efficiency of business. Applied science is especially attractive to me as it is a bridge between new technology and industries. That’s why I came to ASTRI.
Q. Tell us more about your area of research.
My research area in ASTRI is about machine vision technology. It consists of both hardware design in optics, electrical engineering (EE) and mechanical engineering (ME), and software deigns in image processing and AI. Currently, I am spending more efforts on the SoC based machine vision to meet the future challenge in R&D.

Q. In particular, what issues are you hoping to address with your research? Any challenges?
Basically, the most challenge part of R&D for me is the implementation of new technology. Unlike the university, the new technology we are developing need to be applied to the industry.
Q. Tips to excel in the field of your research area.
The core field of my research area is the SoC based machine vision technology.
Firstly, I think continuous learning is important. During our daily job, we need to search papers, attend technical seminars and deep dive into any hot technical trend so as to form the architecture and direction of our research roadmap.
Secondly, as an applied science researcher, customer engagement is also pivotal. Having technical exchanges with customers in industry can help us better learn what the industry really needs and which kinds of new technology is more appropriate to be applied.

Q. What will you do if you are not a researcher?
I will work in solution-based company to automation industry.
Q. What’s your advice to the young people who want to contribute to the I&T industry and ASTRI?
Keep improving, keep exploring, never give up.
