Han Wei, Chief Engineer, CT
Wei Han is the Chief Engineer of Communications Technologies and leads the Medium Access Control and Intelligent Solution (MACI) team. Her research focuses on 5G NR base station protocol stack development, system integration and verification, end-to-end testing, user case and application development, lab tests and trials, customer engagement, and supporting commercialisation of 5G NR technologies. She joined ASTRI after completing her PhD studies in Electronic Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2006.
Q. Can you share some of your proudest moments at ASTRI?
I felt proud when our customer, Sunnada, using base stations with ASTRI technology inside them (base station PHY layer design), passed the CMCC tender test, ranking #1 in 2015 and #5 in 2018, which enabled the wide deployment of their base stations in Chinese cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai and Fuzhou.
I also felt proud when I was one of the representatives from COM to attend the Geneva Award celebration in 2021. The awards meant that ASTRI technologies are highly recognized by the international community.
Q. What was your motivation for getting into this field of research?
My motivation was to make our R&D results become end products that could be deployed worldwide.
As the PC of ARD/256 (5G NR O-RAN for Configurable Network Deployment), I led the project team to study 5G NR O-RAN architecture, protocols and software-hardware integration, set up a proof-of-concept 5G NR O-RAN system, and conducted end-to-end tests to prove that the 5G NR O-RAN concept was feasible. This know-how and experience with 5G NR O-RAN served as a solid foundation for ASTRI 5G NR O-RAN technologies development, which led to the ITF platform project of the 5G O-RAN Base Station, which will be launched soon. There will also be a series of PRPs to commercialize ASTRI 5G NR O-RAN technologies in customers’ end products (such as 5G base stations and O-RAN commercial software) for deployment.

Q. What do you have to say to young girls who want to pursue a career in I&T?

Q. What is the best way to stay relevant in the tech industry?
Keep studying, keep up with the latest industry news, and keep communicating with customers to understand their needs.
Q. What are your favourite pastimes outside of work?
I like to take local tours during weekends and travel outside Hong Kong on long vacations.
